Food Carts of Portland Bike Tour: local flavors and stories

Overview
Portland’s famous food carts are scattered all over the city's five (now six) quadrants, over 600 in total, in over 60 pods — collections of food carts! Starting at our shop, 833 SE Main Street #121, we'll put you on one of our lightweight bicycles and guide you on a 8-12 mile (11-17 km) culinary experience through some of our best-loved chefs and makers, sampling everything from Oregon farm-to-table delights to snacks appropriate to late-night cravings.

Our focus is on locally-owned businesses with a great story; we’ll take you to a few of our favorites, many of which were important in creating the food cart scene as it exists today. Without these unique and passionate people, we may not have even half of what Portland offers to residents and guests alike. Expect flavors and fusions that tell not only a culinary, but also a cultural, tale. Bikes, helmets and plentiful food samples provided.

We keep groups small, so you'll have an intimate experience with your passionate guides!

What To Expect
1
Ladd's Addition
In the Ladd's Addition neighborhood is the heart of the original food cart scene and we'll set the scene by trying some of our favorite coffee and discussing our route for the day.
2
Hawthorne
Hawthorne Boulevard is part of our hometown story: the heart of all that's delicious, funky, and hippie, a thoroughfare with a street food soul! We'll ride into our personal and the city's foodie history (this goes back over a century!) and stop at a special coffee food cart made in a unique vehicle. Here we'll get some caffeinated beverage (if that's what you like) to begin our day!

Well $150 bought my wife and I a total of 4 tacos, 3 chicken wings, and some potato wedges. We've been on food tours all around the county and this is the worst of the worst. Our guide was kind but very young and didn't have any interesting portland knowledge to offer. We rode around for an hour before stopping at a closed restaurant, before proceeding to a taco stand. Food was not ordered a head of time, rather we waited 45 mins for 2 tacos before proceeding. We then went to a donut shop where we were expected to pay (after already buying tickets!). Our last stop after more aimless riding with no context what so ever landed us at a carticopia. One of our group members that was vegetarian was told to go find something without meat. The rest of us got chicken wings after 30 more mins of waiting (we had to wait for someone to drop off a company credit card, before our "guide" ordered). Most food tours are great where eat and learn a lot. This is not one of them. This "tour" can be completed on your own for a fraction of the price. Save your money.

Hi there Matt. As you left identical reviews on several sites, you may have already seen my response. As you noted you were out the day of your tour with one of our young guides, and I’m sorry the first stop was closed (the owners had booked a once-in-a-lifetime gig at the LPGA and we hadn’t connected the date, a mistake that won’t happen again) and you ended up with a challenging trip. My heart really goes out to you all having to deal with wait times on a busy weekend when our mode is to organize better. As I’m sure you guessed by all the five star reviews we typically get, it is not our company’s usual operation and we certainly would appreciate the opportunity to make it good. I was at the shop when you returned and I really wish you would have pulled me aside and said something to me in the moment. I’d much prefer to give you a partial refund — since you obviously felt so financially impacted — instead of responding to your review in this impersonal way that has the potential for some pretty huge hurt feelings for our younger guides, for whom I would rather use this as a learning opportunity than a public shaming. I’m not privy to your thoughts here; why you felt this was the right way to go; but hopefully other guests will see this and, should their expectations not be met, reach out to me so I can apologize and compensate directly. With regards to the vegetarian guest, options are plentiful in Portland but we can’t plan for providing them and prepare our guides unless guests let us know ahead of time. Some of our more experienced guides have done this hundreds of times but for our younger guides some advice is needed.

Our guide (Brian/ Bryan) was wonderful. He was patient, informative and friendly; I felt as if I was riding with a group of friends around the quirky, quaint Portland. Each Food Cart was superb in their own right with its distinct taste and touch. My favorite was Matt’s BBQ Tacos considering the texture and taste bounce off the palette delightfully. I highly recommend if you are looking to immerse yourself in Portland’s bike and food cart culture. This tour is a wonderful fusion of both worlds. Thank you !

We enjoyed the biking part of our “food” tour. Brian, our guide was very informative. However, we’ve been on many food tours and this was definitely the worst!! Our first stop was a food cart that only had vegan food. We are not vegan and we were the only ones on this tour. ( half a vegan egg sandwich and some lumpy strips of vegan French toast) See picture. We asked about stopping for coffee and Brian said that wasn’t included, even though it was advertised as being our first stop. Our 2nd stop was Matt’s BBQ. We had a mediocre taco there.( see picture) We were supposed to go to a place for wings and fries, but they had no potatoes, so we opted for a donut instead. That was the total extent of our food tour.

Richard, I'm so glad you enjoyed the biking! We were concerned about your group's ability to enjoy as there was so much trepidation getting ready for the ride, we consider that a victory. And we're sorry you didn't enjoy vegan food which we do indeed offer to people regardless of whether or not they typically choose a vegan lifestyle. You are the first of our guests not to like the food there; it's typically one of the big wins for us, as is Matt's BBQ Tacos, which was Bon Appetit's pick for one of the 10 best new restaurants of 2019. As a side note, it's worth asking if you've felt unwell recently. We have had a few friends and family report finding food uninspiring after or during a viral infection. Given that you are the first one to have ever called those two stops "mediocre," I wonder if that was what happened.
