I highly recommend taking a wine tour with Cable Cars. Our tour guide Jackie was awesome! She made sure we had the best time on our tour and was very knowledgeable on the wineries in Fredericksburg. Our van driver was great too. Can’t recommend them enough.

We took the "Best of Fredericksburg Tour" which is quite a funny name considering nothing was best and nothing was in Fredericksburg. We booked the trip for December 23rd intending on having an easy Christmas holiday and well aware that Fredericksburg closes down around 3pm on Christmas Eve. Having visited previously and taken a few wine tours we figured this trip would offer a new perspective and some different flavor......BAD CHOICE! First of all, the cable car of course isn't really a cable car, just a remodel of a bus with a cable car look. It is open air and it was a warm Dec. 23rd, so not too bad there, UNTIL you get on the highway going 70+. We never expected that we would basically be driving to Johnson City on this thing, NOTHING except for pickup and drop off was in Fredericksburg. So we get on, pick up one other family of 3 and we are off to the races, just 5 tour guests, 1 host, and 1 driver. Now we expected that the "tour" on the cable car would have history and discussion but there was none. The "host" picked up the microphone one time asked if we could hear, we couldn't, she never attempted a resolution or giving ANY history of the area; it would have been easier for her to sit in the group of us 5 and talk while the bus rolled down the highway. It was about 25 minutes from departure to get to stop 1....what a waste of time as we passed so many other places bustling with cars and people. We arrive at Whispering Oaks Winery, which is not actually the winery, its a metal building they sell you wine in, there is NO TOUR to be had of a Winery. So we get there and they say they don't have us booked but there is NO ONE ELSE there so they can handle the tasting for the 5 of us. We sit at a nice table, the man there gives a 2 minute who we are and where we are then asks who wants a red, white, or sweet tasting. We all choose and 5 minutes later he comes back with the wine, gives a quick description about each of the pours in that round and pours 5 One ounce tastings and leaves with the bottles. This repeats 4 more times, each time he leaves for about 10 minutes and there is no discussion to be had. Needless to say we became very familiar with the other 3 guests in our "tour" almost immediately since nothing else was going on. We reboard the bus and head another 20 minute ride to the brewery for lunch. Food was good although there was a missed order even though there were only 5 of us, but it was handled and food was great. The Beer was great also, but the brewery "tour" was laughable. A very nice waiter walked us in a small room behind the bar, pointed at all the tanks and cooler, said this where stuff goes and then to there then to the cooler. Not much of a tour other than to see some stainless steel equipment. We expected a beer lesson from someone knowledgeable of brewing. The place was nice but there was only maybe 5 other customers there. Finally we head to the distillery. This place was AWFUL! It was 1 of 2 metal buildings and no one else was on site. Apparently the company is a wholesaler of brewing and distilling equipment and decided to adda pot still to their "showroom" and distill some spirits all out of grapes. The tasting included 5 tastings which the gal working said are pretty tough shots and most people don't finish all of them. Well she was correct; none of us had more that 3 sample tastings (which are only a 1/4 shot) because every thing we tasted was TERRIBLE! at least 3 of us on that tour were fairly heavy "drinking connoisseur's" and we were all puzzled why this place was even included. NOTHING was even worth mentioning other than don't bother to stop by. So for $150.00 each we got to spend the day on a noisy open air recreation of a cable car, traveling past many other wineries that were PACKED with people and cars to visit the 3 most barren options I have seen on any tour I have taken in more than 35 countries. Prior to this review I offered private feedback to Cable Wine Tours and explained that this tour was very displeasing and perhaps worth 50 bucks but definitely not anything I would ever pay or expect for 150. Their reply was sorry we didn't like it, the host said everything went well, and they don't give refunds. WELL FOLKS, I HOPE YOU SAVE YOUR MONEY AND FIND ANOTHER TOUR OPERATOR. We walked main street the following morning and had a much better experience with more tastings and history than the tour....total cost for that was about 30 bucks for 2 people!

My girlfriend and I had an amazing time on the cable car wine tour. Our host, Trixie, and driver, Sandy, were both great and we enjoyed their company as we hopped around to the wineries. The lunch provided was very fresh and delicious. Our favorite stop was Slate Theory as we got a tour of the underground wine cave and production line. Great experience overall, very knowledgeable and friendly. Would do again and highly recommend!
