My husband and I took the Friends of the Cabildo French Quarter walking tour last week. We loved it! Our guide was clearly well versed in the history, architecture and culture of the city. He clearly loves the city and is very expressive with the stories and explanations. The guides are all volunteers - wonderfully trained. The cost is less than the other tour companies - excellent value. There is also an historical, restored home above the tour office on Jackson Square. Worth a look before or after the tour.

We took a walking tour of NOLA in July 2011. It started raining and we were the only ones on the tour so we ended up getting a private personalized experience. It was a little over 2 hours and a good amount of walking. Our guide (can't remember name but it was a female) was very knowledgable and informative and we really enjoyed getting to know the history and architecture of the city. She had a lot of little anecdotes that you wouldn't know otherwise about the city, like the fact that the city was started as a place to dump convicts and prostitutes and that is likely why it has the....er...nightlife that it has today lol. It was very reasonably priced and your tour fee also includes free admission to the 1850 house museum, which wasn't anything impressive and took about 10 minutes to visit but hey, free is free. The man in the museum store (where you start the tour) was also really friendly and full of dining and nightlife tips. And the best part is that your money goes towards preserving historical sites in NOLA. Highly recommended.

My husband and I went on the walking tour of the "Friends of the Cabildo" on a warm afternoon in June. The volunteer docent was extremely knowledgeable about the history and architecture of the French Quarter. She took us deep into the Quarter, where we had not been on our own. The guide opened our eyes to events and historical charcters of New Orleans in the early beginnings of the City. The walk was two and half hours and although it was warm and humid, the walk was easy and mostly listening and learning about the fascinating culture of the old city. We would recommend this event to adults of all ages.
