From Ma'alaea Harbor, Maui: Molokini Snorkeling Adventure Aboard Calypso

Overview
Explore the natural wonders of Molokini Crater, a volcanic islet 3 miles (4.8 km) off the coast of Maui, on this snorkeling tour from Maalaea. Surrounded by clear tropical waters, this extinct cone is home to many species of marine life, such as fish, sea urchins, sharks, manta rays, and coral. Molokini is a marine preserve, meaning nothing can be disturbed, keeping the island and underwater environment pristine. You'll also explore Turtle Town, and admire native birds. Two water slides, a glass bottom viewing room, and a "leap of faith" are also available if you don't want to snorkel or finish early. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, soda, and juice are included.

Staff of Calypso are awesome. Overall a great trip thanks to them. The downside to the crater was there were too many people from all the boats out there, I saw more fish snorkeling on my own at Kapalua than I did out at the crater. I learned afterwards that because of all the boats allowed out there at the same time the fish are disappearing. Turtle town was amazing and I snorkeled there comfortably on my own on a different day. I would not have been able to do that if I hadnā€™t gone on Calypso.

It was a wonderful time with wonderful food and people! We unfortunately, sue to weather/water conditions could not go to Turtle town. Though it was a bummer it worked out as this was our first time snorkeling and we could get used to it.

Many will (and did) like this snorkeling adventure. I will try to set out what I thought were the best parts, worst parts, and alternatives available to this trip. The captain and crew are great and the organization is well run for the most part. It was not clear to me from the information provided that parking at the pier (charged using an automated system) is only $4.00. The parking is near the boat and convenient. The literature referred to "free" parking in another location. It was not clear where that was but even if "free" paying the 4 bucks by credit card is well worth it! After meeting and signing the usual waivers shortly after 7 am, you board the boat where there is breakfast available.Don't anticipate much. Some semi fresh scrambled eggs, some cinnamon buns from a package, and some juice and coffee, not much else. We got in line early so I cannot comment on whether everyone got what they wanted. We somewhat jokingly dubbed the cruise "the adventure with 148 of your closest friends"! It is pretty crowded although there are seats for everyone. Cruising to Molokini Crater takes a while. Apparently we had a pretty calm day. The crew mentioned the area around the departure port is famous for strong winds and rough seas. No problem on our trip. We arrived at Molokini Crater. The Calypso has 11 water entry points along its stern so getting in the water is fairly quick even with so many people. They supply the equipment but have no problem with you bringing your own mask, snorkel, etc. Molokini Crater was disappointing in terms of the number and varieties of fish. We saw many more right off our hotel beach in Wailea. Boats are jammed in fairly close together so there is a lot of human activity which may discourage the sea life. After a reasonable period of time we re-boarded and cruised to an area where the turtles are more common. Turns out it is basically just off shore near or just below Wailea. Again we saw as many turtles off our hotel beach although we did spot one very large (300 lb+) turtle in their area. They provided "lunch" which was basically some pork BBQ and cheese on a bun. Again, nothing to write home about. We returned to dock by about 1:30 in the afternoon. All things considered it is a good value for the money but Molokini Crater is a bit overworked and overbooked. We snorkeled four other times just off our hotel and saw as much or more as we did on the tour.
