This trip left and returned on time, and all the amenities were as promised for a reasonable price. The crew was friendly and attentive. For snorkeling, Turtle Town was way more interesting than Molokini. At the Molokini Crater, the crew instructed us that that the ship’s passengers could snorkel from the front of the boat to the inside of the crater, and about 50 meters from each side of the boat. All the coral and most of the fish were within about 60 feet of the crater wall. We had 50 minutes to snorkel. The experience was like visiting an aquarium. Other boats filled with snorkelers crowded up next to us. Lots of snorkelers, not many fish. At Turtle Town, we had a much longer coastline to explore. As a moderately experienced snorkeler, I found exploring the nooks and crannies of the reef much more interesting. In the last 20 minutes of the 55 minute visit to this location, I spotted two large turtles (honu) nearby, which was a thrill, despite the fact that I’d seen many turtles during my last trip to Maui in 2013. Some things never get old.

When researching I found lots of options, we chose the Frogman (catamaran Malolo) mostly because the reviews of other tours mentioned the number of guests as a negative. Our boat (Malolo) was about 60 total guests. Checking in (early, but that’s actually a good thing) was easy, signed a form (each person) and that was it. We boarded the boat about 6:30 and by 6:45 we were headed out toward Molokini. The staff were very friendly. The ride out takes about an hour. We did a lap around the crater, with some background information provided, before we anchored a few yards from the wall of the inside of the crater. After some instructions we were free to get into the water. Some reviews mention the snorkeling isn’t great... with regards to the quantity of fish I understand why some people are disappointed. There are plenty of fish but not in schools of 10,000. The visibility is amazing though. And it’s really easy snorkeling. We spent a little over an hour there then packed up and headed toward Makena to see some turtles. We were fortuntate and saw 4 turtles of different sizes. We ate lunch on board (which was simple but actually really good, the ham was amazing...) and then headed back to shore. All the boats are going to have the same snorkeling experience, they can’t influence the number of fish etc. What made the difference for us was the boat and the crew. We saw bigger boats at the crater and the idea of snorkeling with 120 people didn’t look like fun to us. A smaller group like what we had looked much more enjoyable. Plus the crew was a lot of fun. Ann was awesome, she was so friendly and worked so hard for us. And Steve was great as well. Pro tip: the ride back to the dock was very windy and choppy and if you sit on the front of the boat on the way back you WILL get wet. If that’s not cool with you, make sure you sit in the back of the boat on the way home.

They knew they were not taking us to Molokini that day. Why did they not inform us until after the boat left the shore? We bought another ticket that morning and they did not even give us a discount nor did they tell us that we were not going to Molokini. Food onboard was very mediocre. They took is to a couple of dive sites around Maui. We could easily have driven to those locations. This is a waste of money unless they actually take you to Molokini.
