Full-Circle "Reverse" - Luxury Road to Hana Tour from West Maui

Overview
#1 We go ALL THE WAY AROUND THE MOUNTAIN so you don't see the same thing twice!
#2 We do it in REVERSE, the way the locals do it!
There are a few options to choose from to explore the Road to Hana so you can experience the rainforest & its waterfalls, streams, fresh water ponds, bamboo forests & lush foliage, but there is only one company where the owners are actually a Native Hawaiian husband & wife team that were born & raised Hawaii. We pride ourselves in sharing the Hawaiian culture, history, & stories about Hawaii & what its like to live life here in the islands, while treating you like the VIP that you are! Our family history goes back 150 years & they still live in a little community out on the Road to Hana. While on tour we'll stop by our family's fruit stand that has been operating for 40 yrs & is the home of "the original banana bread." We'll cover the rigid & rugged terrain on the backside of Maui & travel where most visitors never see. Hot lunch & souvenir backpack included.

I will start by saying that the info provided to us by our hotel was incorrect but the website from Hawaiian style tours is pretty accurate. It was advertised that we would have a tour guide ā€œborn and raisedā€ in Hawaii, we would have a breakfast, hot lunch at Hana Ranch restaurant, we would be provided sunscreen, etc. None of those were accurate. Breakfast was a croissant and a piece of pineapple. I wish I would eaten breakfast beforehand and it was simply not enough. Lunch was not at Hana Ranch. It was cold and not tasty. The flower farm and store were not as exciting as they sounded. I donā€™t mean to disrespect the locals- I just wished I could have chosen where to stop. We passed several more interesting appearing local stops. The tour van was cold. They failed to tell us ahead of time that A/C was broken (fixed to be set on high at all times). What I wish I knew more than anything was that commercial vans canā€™t do the majority of the fun things Hana has to offer. We were frequently told which things we should come back to do. Now, I donā€™t know about you but I didnā€™t pay $700 to do the tour just so I could go back and drive it myself, also. We were told where to do the hikes, the waterfalls, the views, etc. but we didnā€™t actually do them. I enjoyed the few stops we had, but if youā€™re looking for action (as opposed to stopping for a picture), this is not the tour for you. The van wouldnā€™t so much as stop by the parking lots for one of the riders to put a few bucks in a jar and grab a fresh local fruit. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. It was mostly interesting, but sometimes I wish we could just relax to some Hawaiian music. At the end of the day I wish we would have driven it ourselves so we could pick our stops and had more action. For the price we paid, I felt disappointed in a day wasted.

Our tour started at 7:55 and until 11:20, we made three bathroom breaks and they were the only reason for the stops. We were on our way to Manawainui Lookout but halfway there, Janel learned there was a flood. From that time on, our first main stop was to have lunch at 12:40. So all that time was spent on numerous curvy roads. By the time we headed to our second stop at 1:20, I just wanted to go to bed and rest. We stopped at: Kailan Flower Farm (1 hour for lunch) Black sand beach (1 hour) Pua State park (20 mins) Hana refreshment park for banana bread (15-20mins allotted and you have to make the line) Keā€™anae (15 mins to make up for Wailea Falls) The stops we missed: Mianawainui Lookout Wailea Falls Iā€™ve been in tours were the rides are long like in Iceland and to the Scottish Highlands. The guide always made short stops along the way, allowing time for stretching, actually seeing these spots live, and take pictures, not just point them out. On this tour, most of the pictures could only be taken on the bus for practical safety reasons. Also, you had to be quick to take a decent pic. Or try a second time on the way back. My father and I are highly disappointed with the tour. We were exhausted from the ride more than being out there exploring. I even dreaded the way back cause I couldnā€™t imagine being back on that bus again. These tours are expensive and what we wanted, in addition to learning a bit of history, to actually experience beautiful spots instead of passing by them. There was nothing that could be done about the flood but it seems like the set up of the tour is not what my father and I were looking for. Either rent a car, that way you have more control on where you stop and for how long. I made the mistake of thinking that we would be making short stops to many of the places listed. Rookie mistake, at least in Hawaii. Or check out AirBnb experiences. They tend to be a bit more accommodating. Pro: Janela is an affable and great storyteller. She had plenty of information to share. When I got motion sickness, she was very helpful providing a Dramamine, offering to seat me in the front, and ginger candy.

We loved all of the background information and entertaining story telling from Tony, our tour guide! He constantly provided amazing stories about his time living on the island and tons of amazing facts and stories about the beautiful Hawaiian culture. The stops along this tour provide such a full perspective of the island - including black sand beaches and gorgeous waterfalls to swim in, and countless awe inspiring lookouts throughout the whole tour. I would sign up for this tour again and again because i know there were so many things to appreciate along the way!
