On Saturday, July 6, 2019, our family went on the Darkside of Salida & Ghost Tour by Salida Walking Tours. Honestly, the tour had a lot of potential to be fun and informative, but something very unexpected happened at the very beginning of the tour. A man who was clearly attempting to be funny, blurted out a, not so clever joke. What surprised, I think everybody is the response from our tour guide, Steve. Instead of just giving a chuckle and proceeding on with the tour, Steve insulted the man by telling him that he is drunk and that his drunk humor isn’t funny. Now, I understand that, if guests are getting out of hand, a tour guide may have to be forceful for the enjoyment of everybody on the tour. However, a seasoned tour guide would start subtle and work his way up to forceful only if necessary. That wasn’t the case here. What Steve needs to understand is that people come to Salida on vacation, and many indulge a little during, and possibly after dinner. Consequently, it should be expected that one or more of the guests have had a couple drinks prior to the tour. Especially tours that begin at 9:00 PM. Professional tour guides learn how to handle such situations with humor and grace without having to resort to insults. So Steve, if you’re reading this, you provided a lot of interesting information, but if you’re wondering why nobody tipped you after the tour, it’s because tour guides are expected to come across as friendly and fun, not as arrogant and insulting to their customers. It offended everybody. Not just the target of your scorn.

It's a shame when one individual, a person who clearly cannot drink alcohol and function in public, attempts to smear a stellar company. This review is inaccurate and self-serving. This individual was intoxicated, was inappropriate, and, in a group wiht non-drinkers and children, our guide did the 100% correct thing and immediately shut down the inappropriate, offensive behavior. The review is also inaccurate. Tips were received, as have positive reviews from others on the tour. Fortunately, we live in a time where the public sees such bitter words for what they are, weighs them against hundreds of 5-star reviews, and dismisses reviews such as this in context of an overwhelming number of positive reviews.

Steve provides a very informative tour with personal anecdotes that add to the intrigue of the tour. The stories bring the darker history of Salida alive and make for a rich narrative.
