Alaska Excursions
On this spellbinding wilderness expedition, you will travel through fjords and rain forests viewing some of the most spectacular Alaskan scenery in Southeast. You’ll see everything from wildflowers to towering mountains and top off the experience with up-close views of the Davidson Glacier. Your adventure begins aboard one of our boats custom-designed to provide an intimate viewing experience. During your 75-minute journey through North America’s deepest fjord, keep a lookout for whales, seals, and cascading waterfalls while your Naturalist guide tells you more about the area you are traveling through. Upon arrival at the remote Glacier Point beach, you will take a short, adventurous drive across the forested glacial moraines to our base camp where you will gear up in rubber boots and a life jacket. After a ¼ mile walk, the forest opens to reveal a breathtaking view of the Davidson Glacier and pristine lake below. Here you will board a 31-foot voyager canoe for a trip around the lake to view the glacier and enjoy the incredible Alaskan wilderness while your guide shares his extensive knowledge of the area. Conditions permitting, you’ll make a stop on the delta to get up close and personal with the glacier. This is an optional 1/2 to 1-mile hike over a sand and pebble beach. After returning to the base camp, enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach before your return trip on the custom designed wildlife-viewing boat .

Pros first: motivated young guides conducting a tour through true wilderness at the foot of Davidson Glacier. These guides live here with no running water or electricity for the 5 months of the year that they are leading tours … so this IS in fact wilderness. Guides was very funny and upbeat, and also well-informed. Comfortable boat ride to/from the cruise ship, with naturalist who pointed out wildlife along the way. We enjoyed putting on the rubber boots and life vests and the “soft hike” through the woods. Shout out to guide Lydia - she’s awesome! Now cons: the lunch was mediocre; the ride to/from the tour site is over an hour each way ... but that’s what we expected because a cruise ship by definition stops pretty far from the “wilderness”. We would have preferred the chance to actually use our oars on the canoes, rather than have them be powered by motors. We agree with the comment that the rocks at the base of the glacier were rather ordinary.

We had a great time on this excursion. The staff were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, especially Marie (who was our guide during the canoe trip) and Boston (who helped ferry us on the boat trip from/to Skagway). We lucked out to have good weather that day, so we had a good view of the glacier ("Dave!"). The mountain views beyond the fireweed field were the most picturesque portraits we took during our whole trip. And we got to eat a bumper crop of wild Alaskan strawberries! It was magic. We also had a bit of time during our trip back via the boat and so we were able to stop at a waterfall and to see a whole group of sea lions up close (as well as several bald eagles). We couldn't eat the food because we are vegetarian and unfortunately, our cruise line didn't give us the option to pick dietary preferences, which apparently other cruise lines do. So, I can't comment on that. We just had to suffice with tons of berries (which was fine by us!).
