What To Expect

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Your expert guide will meet you at the Pavilion next to the Upper Falls Parking Area at 8AM. This is also the staring point for Uncle Tom's Trail. The hike is a 6-mile loop. The hike is along the Canyon Rim, through the forest out to Ribbon Lake, and then past a geyser basin, Clear Lake, and the Wapiti Meadows with big views of the Hayden Valley. If you hike one trail in Yellowstone this is it!

My daughter and I did the Lamar Valley hike, this week. The guide was very knowledgable which was great, but the actual hike was nothing we could not have done on our own. We did a loop that never strayed far from the road. We saw some bison from a distance and a few pronghorn. We saw more animals and had better views from our car on the drive into the park. The pace was slow, the biting flies were aggressive. If you are in good shape, a little adventurous I would not recommend this hike. If you are hesitant to leave the road on your own then you might enjoy this. We wanted to like this hike but it was just okay.

Thanks for your review! It was great hiking with you two. Maybe try our Bunsen Peak Vista Hike next time. It is a little tougher, maybe better suited for you. The flies can be tough a few weeks out of the season. You definitely hit them at peak time for this year. Bug spray helps. We are going to start issuing head nets during the peak buggy times. Thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

My husband and I booked a guided hike with Yellowstone Hiking Guides and Emily Jo was our guide. She was fabulous. Emily is personable, fun, knowledgeable and did a great job giving us insights about the area we were in, the plants, the geology and fun animal facts. We greatly enjoyed our 6 hours with her and I would highly recommend her and their service to anyone wanting to get off the beaten path. Thank you for a terrific day!

Yellowstone hiking guides are the only guides that allow you to join a group rather than arrange a personal tour. Due to the shoulder season, I was alone and nobody but me signed up for that day. I thought they would cancel as most tour groups would have required a minimum number of people. But Emily Jo showed up and took me on a private tour. She is very knowledgeable about the park, has a clear love of nature and the park. I learned so much from her. Her family is very involved with the preservation of the park. I felt like I was with a friend. The lunch was great too. Accommodated my gluten free needs.
