Granite Reef Kayaking Trip on the Lower Salt River

Overview
The trip is a scenic, unguided, four and a half hour kayaking journey down the Lower Salt River. Starting at Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch, you and your group will kayak down a leisurely thirteen mile stretch of river as it moves it's way through the Tonto National Forest. Participants often witness wild horses, otters, birds and other wildlife that cool off in the river during the summer months.

We have the special privilege of being the only kayak rental company located right on the Salt River, so our trips launch directly from our site which you are returned to via shuttle after your trip. Each reservation includes a kayak rental, paddle, PFD and return shuttle to starting site.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to launch time so you may complete waivers, prepare belongings, receive safety orientation prior to the scheduled launch time.  Water, sunscreen and dry bags are for sale. Orientation is mandatory and includes basic paddling, water safety and geography of the river.

We had a wonderful time kayaking on the Salt River. The river and its surroundings are gorgeous. We saw several groups of wild horses along the way, including one that crossed the river just as we passed by. Paddling downstream is easy with just a few minor rapids to tackle. Overall, an excellent experience. That said, I do have a few negative things to point out: 1) 4 hours is way too little if you also want to make stops for a packed lunch, cool down with a swim, stay to watch the horses for a while etc. 2) Tubers with loud voices and speakers can really destroy the feeling of serenity. 3) A lot of beer cans and other stuff on the bottom of the river. It makes me so sad and angry. Why can’t people who obviously hate nature stay away from it! 4) Instructions could have been better, especially regarding how to pace the trip, approximated travel times between key places along the route etc.

This is not for beginners. The instructions were basic with no information about how to get back into the kayak if you tip over. The first rapids were very strong and pulled several of us in to bushes and trees in the bank. My kayak tipped over and I bounced through the rapids without a kayak or paddle! Another in our group tried to capture my kayak and it tipped him over. No instructions about what to do when you are bouncing through the rapids without a kayak or paddle! Very scary and dangerous. Limited skill assessment! I would never do this trip again. The remaining currents/rapids were easier to navigate except for the large numbers of tubers and young people in the river. Safety needs to be higher on there priority and instructions on what to do when someone tips over!

Did this as a family on Mother's Day! We had so much fun, even me as a beginner. We were able to see some wild horses! Great time for all. Highly recommend this for both beginners and experienced kayakers.
