Granite Reef Kayaking Trip on the Lower Salt River

Overview
The trip is a scenic, unguided, four and a half hour kayaking journey down the Lower Salt River. Starting at Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch, you and your group will kayak down a leisurely thirteen mile stretch of river as it moves it's way through the Tonto National Forest. Participants often witness wild horses, otters, birds and other wildlife that cool off in the river during the summer months.

We have the special privilege of being the only kayak rental company located right on the Salt River, so our trips launch directly from our site which you are returned to via shuttle after your trip. Each reservation includes a kayak rental, paddle, PFD and return shuttle to starting site.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to launch time so you may complete waivers, prepare belongings, receive safety orientation prior to the scheduled launch time.  Water, sunscreen and dry bags are for sale. Orientation is mandatory and includes basic paddling, water safety and geography of the river.

Listen to the employees about paddling efficiently, and conserve some energy for the last 20 minutes - the river widens and the current slows; you'll have to work at it a bit to finish. I went through 3 liters of water. I probably should have gone through all 4 that I had. It's really nice in the morning. As the day goes on, if you start getting hot, put your hat in the water and put it back on your head. It helped a lot my first trip, and I should have done it my second. Oh, yes - you'll want a hat. And sunblock you can reach easily. We've been twice, and because of varying rainfall, dam releases, and such, it was like two entirely different rivers. When you get away from the tubers and it gets quiet, you'll see the wildlife - waterfowl, raptors, roadrunners, deer, and the horses, who will probably be in the river with you.

The first 10-11 miles of the trip were ABSOLUTELY beautiful… the ending left a bit to be desired. Seeing the beautiful scenery, wild horses and other animals was definitely a highlight of the trip. My friends and I truly enjoyed the vast majority of our kayaking experience. The staff at the launch site as well as the gentleman who picked us up were very nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. The trash and graffiti in and around the river was very much unexpected (mostly towards the end of the trip.) The last mile to mile and a half of the kayaking trip lead into an area that had a significant over growth of the river grass - which of course gathered the trash and slowed the movement of anything. The site to disembark from the kayaking trip was not marked and difficult to find. Personally, I just recommend and feel as though people on the longer kayak trip need to have a better understanding as to what to expect at the end of your kayak trip. Although the ending was not the most desirable it didn’t over shadow the rest of the experience. I would def go again and recommend the trip … Again, I just think having a more realistic expectation of the ending would have been nice.
