This charter was absolutely an amazing experience. When we boarded the boat we were given an area inside to place our belongings. We had brought along our own binoculars, however, there were binoculars available, maps of the islands, and books/information about the whales and other wildlife we could potentially see. The boat was very comfortable, clean bathroom was on board, and snacks were available for reasonable prices. The captain and staff were all friendly, super knowledgeable and very professional. I felt very safe on the boat and my children were also not afraid on the open water. They were flexible with some of the rules of the boat, like going up on the upper deck, (but not about life jackets) but we ended up staying in the bow of the boat (set aside for families) because it had the best views in my opinion. You definately need to bring something warm to wear like a sweatshirt of pile jacket for outside and I would also recommend sunglasses and of course sun screen. I was a little concerned that we wouldn't see any whales when after about 15 minutes of driving the captain had yet to locate them, but eventually we got news that a group of whales was in the area. Once we reached the area, one whale swam right alongside our boat. It was amazing! You can't really appreciate how big the dorsal fins are until you see them in person! Then we headed up towards the pod and witnessed them splashing around, 'spy hopping' and slapping their tails. The whales began moving toward us and this is when we had our best viewing. I took the attached video with my digital camera (one thing I wish is that I would have had a better video camera with me). The captain placed a microphone in the water and we were able to hear the whales talking to each other. One of the guides mentioned that the different whale groups have different dialects. Then we followed the whales southward and saw two whales jump out of the water! They were a far distance away, but it was still breathtaking to see them leap out of the water and turn over and splash back into the water. This was absolutely the highlight to our vacation in the San Juans and I would highly recommend it. I don't remember it being alot more expensive than the other tours, but if it is, it is worth the extra cost. They did suggest a gratuity for the crew members at the end of the tour which was an added cost that I wasn't expecting. This tour couldn't have been a more memorable experience!

My family (Dad, Mom, 17 yr-old son, 14 yr-old daughter) had a great experience with Captain Dan and crew on the Eclipse. The captain was well-prepared and knew where the whales had been traveling in recent days and where were likely to be found. He patiently tracked the whales until ultimately we were surrounded by several groups of related whales displaying virtually the full range of behaviors. At certain times a dozen or more whales could be seen in action at various angles and distances from the boat - sometimes quite close. Captain Dan and his naturalist, Mary, were very friendly and helpful in describing and explaining the activities of the whales, and in identifying the individual whales observed. This was one of the highlights of our vacaton.

If you love nature, the ocean and orcas (killer whales), this is for you. Courteous and knowledgeable crew whose passion for the islands and the wild life made this an unforgettable afternoon. The attention to detail and willingness to cater to our every need at such a great price made this a remarkable value.
