We found Ehu and Kai through The Big Island Revealed (a great guidebook!). The great service started with the email communication the month before we arrived--they knew we had a family of four with two teenagers and they suggested we try the outrigger canoe rather than separate kayaks. With separate kayaks, my wife and I would've struggled to get the boys across the bay. (I don't know about your boys, but ours have a tendency to drag their oars in the water and mention how hard it is to paddle.) With the canoe, we were all in one boat and didn't mind when the boys didn't paddle. When we arrived, the location couldn't be more convenient--right on the beach. Parking can be a little challenging. Our local guide Peter took us across Kealakekua Bay and told us great stories from Hawaiian legend and more recent times. We got to Captain Cook around 8:30 am, which was great as the big snorkeling tours had not arrived yet. The snorkeling near Captain Cook monument is fantastic! Peter pointed out lesser traveled spots to explore and we had a great time for a couple of hours. Then we headed back to the beach and to lunch at a spot Peter recommended (Umeke's in Kona). Ehu and Kai are a family-run operation and their friendliness can't be beat.

This business provides a unique opportunity to support local business and traditions. With a wonderful "part of the family" feel, you can work with Peter to have your ideal paddling trip. My husband and I were traveling with my usually active mom who was having some frustrating back issues. So Peter suggested we go out with him in his outrigger canoe to go snorkeling in the bay--this way my mom wouldn't need to paddle. It was an exceptional experience. We went out early and Peter shared his culture and ancestral history to make the trip very different from other operators. Of course, the snorkeling was amazing, as usual. If you're looking for a more genuine, personalized experience without tourist hype, please give this family your business.

Just came back from an amazing kayak self guided tour. Rofus the owner was very helpful and resourceful. The kayaks were great and well set up, and their location just off the bay was perfect.
