We enjoyed a rewarding lunch at the view point of rainbow bridge, with fog running over our heads. Sean did a great job explaining Hawaiian culture and history. Although the rain cut our second hike on the sliding sand trail short, it was a good trip overall.

A person could drive up to Haleakala and do these two trail hikes on their own, BUT I very much appreciated that Hike Maui picked us up at our resort, provided lots of snacks & lunch, sturdy rain jackets, backpacks and a friendly, knowledgeable guide. Our guide, George, urged us to drink plenty of water, offered yummy fuel at every turn, kept a good pace, warned us gently about the altitude, reminded us to reapply sunscreen and pointed out lovely overlooks and flora. We had plenty of bathroom breaks and a nice gift shop/snack shop stop on the way there and the way back. Haleakala Crater is otherworldly and breathtaking to behold. Our group sat and appreciated the view for 20 minutes while our guide offered full-size candy bars to help us get back up that hill later. Pro tips: Wear hiking boots with ankle support! It can get really cold, windy and rainy atop Haleakala. Seriously wear some layers. Let Hike Maui know ahead of time if you need vegetarian lunch, and they happily accommodate with a gardenburger sandwich - yum. The air up there is thin. Hydrate & eat, so you don't get altitude sickness. Sunscreen! Reapply often! Don't forget your ears & the back of your neck.

We hike with Jeremy. It was a rainy day all over the island. It turned out to be the best thing to be on the hike because there really wasn’t anything else to do The first hike was about 2.5 miles, to the crater rim. The trail was all rock, uneven, and puddles. Hiking in was downhill, so coming out - uphill. It was very doable if u are an active person. I sprinted up the hill the last half back. Then we went to the summit 10,000 ft. Wow, we ran up about 25 yards of stairs to a gazebo type thing at the top. The wind was blowing about 30 mph, it was steady rain and mist. We couldn’t see anything from the gazebo. But, it was a great experience. We were unable to take our second hike due to the rain Jeremy was a very good guide, lots of info. And seeing the change in environment as we ascended was really cool. Jeremy also had info about activities on the island, places to eat, native shows that are worthwhile.
