Haleakala Downhill Self-Guided Bike Tour

Overview
For over 22 years Maui Sunriders Bike Company has been offering the Self-Guided Haleakala Downhill Bike Tour on Maui. We're the only bike tour on Maui operated by USA Cycling Coaches & BICP Certified Bike Instructors. We have 3 full-service bike shops on the island with expert mechanics tuning bikes daily. This bike ride is one of the most popular activities to do on Maui with guests returning annually. Our tour van goes up the same route you’ll bike down pointing out the local history, points of interest & suggestions for places to visit. Ride begins at 6,500 feet right outside the National Park where all bike operators on Maui start. You have the freedom to stay in your comfort zone & stop along the way to enjoy the beauty of the upper Haleakala National Park section. The lower section of the ride starts in Makawao. You will find many unique shops, restaurants, churches & art galleries in the charming towns on the route. Experience why visitors & locals love Maui Sunriders Bike Co.

Makawao
The next section of downhill begins with entering into a small town that carries on the traditions of the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) life. In the heart of Paniolo Country sits the historic town of Makawao. This quaint town located on the slopes of Haleakala is rich in paniolo heritage with rustic charm as well as being a flourishing arts community. Stop to have lunch or browse through one of the fascinating shops or galleries scattered throughout this charming town. With our self-paced Haleakala downhill bike ride, guests have more freedom to stop along the route to eat, shop, and sightsee than on a guided tour.

The bikes are appropriate to the task with good brakes, tires and gearing for safely running the steep descent for both experienced riders and relative novices. The guides leap frog their riders in two vans so help is never too far away and no rider is left behind. They do a good job of preparing us for the route which could easily be a bit confusing. The ride was thrilling and worth the time dedicated to make it happen!

Good fun - but it’s just two 20 minutes downhills with the long middle part removed due to local laws. The check in, safety briefing and van rides took up most of the time. Bikes were not great, all had just one gear set at a very low gear so hard to get any purchase when needed. Our guide was very in-your-face. My daughter was struggling a little to adjust her bike helmet, he bellowed “this is setting off red flags for me!”. He should be helpful and encouraging rather than browbeating clients.

We were a little apprehensive but immediately felt at ease because of Dane's demeanor and jovial spirit. He provided tips and local recommendations. The Bike trip itself was AMAZING and was one of my favorite activities. We loved that it was self placed but still had a guided feel.
