We were picked up about 2.00 pm and taken to Kahului where we were transferred to another bus, also a slightly larger mini bus. The driver that we got was not good at developing group cohesion and did weird things like locking us all in the bus while he went to put the dinner orders in, he was gone a long time, and one of the older passengers wanted to get off to go to the toilet. There were some elderly and not very fit looking passengers in the group and a couple with very young children and I wondered how everybody was going to cope with the 3.5 hour trip, a lot of it on zigzag, windy roads, very scary, going up a volcano and then dealing with the altitude. It poured with rain and was very cloudy and misty on the way up. However Mother Nature turned it on for us, we got our sunset and everybody survived the road and the altitude. The driver warmed up a little too and at least he got us up there and back safely although he certainly was not the most lively or entertaining tour guide I had throughout my Hawaii trip. It was very cold up there but I went prepared and took all the warm clothes I had with me including parka and beanie. This trip is very long and on a very windy road. We did not get dinner until about 9.00 pm, there was a choice of chicken, fish or vegetarian, I got the vegetarian which was woeful, both the chicken and fish looked fine, the fish probably slightly better. We had some acclimatisation stops on the way up, but no stops on the way down until dinner at Kahalui. This trip is not suitable for the elderly and infirm or for young children, although the passengers on my bus all survived and coped well. If you have problems with the altitude, there is no medical assistance up there. I wanted to see sunset at Haleakala and I am happy I saw it, and experienced the whole thing. Others drive up themselves , hike up or cycle down, if you are up for any of that it is probably a more enjoyable experience but this tour did help me achieve my goal, which is why I ended up scoring it a 3.
