We did the Sunset Tour in April 2018. We were picked up at our condo at 3:30 PM and brought to the Golf Course to be transferred to the bus taking us on the Sunset Tour and dinner after. The driver who picked us up and lots of interesting comments for our trip to the golf course. He refrained his comments since he didn't want to spoil it for our Crater Guide. Unfortunately the lady who picked us up wasn't very good. I couldn't count the number of time she said Aloha or as we entered the park - saying you must stay on the paved areas and cannot go to the summit. She had some comments but the way they were delivered it seemed like she wasn't very interested in the tour group or her surroundings. Many times she repeated herself. When we got to the summit one of her associates was there and for the entire group he pointed out various aspects of the summit, how to take pictures, where to take pictures, what we should look out for , talked a little bit about the observatories etc. I believe she just sat on the bus and didn't contributing anything to our group while we were awaiting the sunset. The sunset its self and crater were gorgeous. We were lucky in that just before the sunset the crater opened up and we could get pictures of it, the other guide pointed out the islands which can be seen while looking at the crater and they were neat. Unfortunately I have about 20 different pictures as the Sun Set - now which to pick for Shutterfly. I use a camera vs phone - not certain if that is better or not but I don't have to worry about battery life. Remember you are at 10,000 ft and it is cold and blustery up on the crater - layer and coat. Shorts will work but a sweatshirt and coat come in handy. The cost of the tour included a meal at the golf course. We were suppose to be back at our Condo by 9 but didn't get the meal until 9. The poor workers at golf course were waiting. I believe the other buses had already been there and left by the time we arrived. The food was good but nothing exceptional Bus driver wasn't very punctual and stopped to let everyone pass her which caused us to be late. Would I recommend this Tour line - there are only 3 who have access to do this tour, not if I had the choice. We did Road to Hana with the Valley Island Excursions and they were supposed to be able to give this tour in May 2018. If given the choice, we would have done the Valley Island group.

The sunset was not as great as was hyped. Fortunately the clouds gave way so that we could see the bottom of the crater, but not enough to enable us to see the setting sun.

Awesome trip! Our tour guide was outstanding. Being a local, he knew so much information that he shared that made the drive to and from interesting. He went out of his way to make sure we ALL had a great experience. He got out of his van, up on Mt. Haleakala and took many pictures of us in order for us to have great memories. The other driver/guide just sat in her van while ours was out with us sharing the COLD and and beautiful sights. It WAS cold!! Some of our fellow travelers showed up in shorts, skirts, sleeveless shirts and and froze their buns off. PEOPLEbelieve 5e description when it tells you to bring coats and other cold weather gear. Were from Chicago and we were glad we had brought a light winter coat, gloves, and hatyou need them. The vistas at the top are incomparable. If youre going to Mauitake this tour.
