You get up at 2am and take a shuttle van ride for an hour to Bike Maui's shop. They outfit you with top-quality clothing - rain shells, fleece vests, gloves, and helmets. You dress in layers because it's below freezing at the top. You get back on the shuttle and make it to the Haleakala summit around 5am. You watch in awe as the sun rises over the 3000' deep volcano crater. Then back in the shuttle van down to a roadside where they have the bikes set up. You get on your bike, and then basically sit on the seat, steer, and brake for 26 miles of breattaking scenery. Notice that there was a word missing from the previous sentence: pedal. You're basically cruising downhill, with a little bit of flat land and a couple of tiny mild uphills, the entire time. This isn't cycling, it's sitting on a bike. We passed about half a dozen cyclists going the other way -- UP the mountain. Now that's real cycling. And as a road bike rider, I felt a twinge of envy (not that I could make it even halfway up that mountain without passing out). I could also have done without the helmets, which weren't standard bike helmets but looked like they were designed for Evel Knievel for his motorcycle jump across the grand canyon. But can't knock the amazing scenery - the sunrise, the views going down the mountain switchbacks, and even the farmland. The guides were also terrific - informative, patient, funny, inclusive. In all, it's a great experience as long as you don't expect to get any exercise. N.B. the timing makes this a great first-day activity in Maui after arriving from the east coast of the U.S. mainland. You'll want to go to bed at 6pm and when you get up for the 2am pickup you're body will think it's normal wakeup time.

This tour was recommended as a top thing to do on Maui and it did not disappoint. Had a friendly and fun van driver and guide for the sunrise visit to Haleakala National Park. We arrived at the summit at 5:30 AM as the first hints of sunshine broke the horizon. The sun rose fully at 6:35 and we departed at 7:00 sharp. Lucked out with the weather both for sunrise and the ride down. The bike ride leader for our group of six kept a good pace and clearly communicated when to stop, turn or pull to the right to let traffic pass. We took three 2- or 3-minute water and photo breaks on the way down. The transport van followed us with our belongings the entire way. We arrived at Paia around 9:15 AM, quite a bit earlier than anticipated. Given my druthers, I would have stopped for breakfast at the lodge about halfway down the mountain, but I know others had other acitivities to get to.
