If you arrive at their shop a few minutes before 3am, it is worth it. Believe it or not, it gets very crowded with people checking in and trying on equipment. We were not sure what to expect as far as procedure so this review will be more about that than Haleakala (I reviewed the park on their page). When you walk into the shop, you will be greeted by a super nice guy, and he confirm your registration. He'll send you to the back of the shop to pick out helmets, rain/wind gear, vests, gloves, backpacks, etc. There are a few employees helping to make sure you pick the right sizes which is helpful. The day we went I would say there were 3 buses with 50-60 people going (I honestly didn't think there would be that many people). After everyone checks in, they take you outside and explain the bike features. Everyone is loaded on to the buses and off to the summit. It didn't seem like that long of a trip because Corey talked the whole way up about the summit, his personal experiences hiking, directions to get back down while biking (it is not a straight shot), and random things about the island. He also cracked corny jokes which my husband and I appreciated :) Once we reached the summit the bus waited for us until 15 minutes after the sun rose. I would advise anyone wanting stuff from the gift shop to get it before hand. It gets extremely crowded after sunrise. After we loaded back on the bus, we had a restroom stop on the way down the summit, then parked just outside of the park to receive our bikes. There were more Bike Maui employees waiting for us with a trailer of bikes to choose from. I was glad they had choices because when I selected the size bike I needed I was in between 2 sizes. They have you gear up, give you good directions, and send you on your way. The highlight of the journey down was smelling the eucalyptus trees. The company is very efficient and easy to use overall. Our only complaint is at different points employees would ask for tips... at over $150 per person I thought that was a little unnecessary. I would recommend them to anyone who wanted this type of adventure.
