So worth waking up early for this fun adventure! The folks at Bike Maui were great and Marlon was a really fun guide up the mountain. Many dad jokes and fun facts later we were at the top of Haleakala before the crowds to watch a stellar sunrise. It is cold up there so definitely dress for it- long pants, hat and warm gloves a must! Thanks to Billy we even got to see the ISS fly by before the sun came up! After a mini tour of the park and some fun photo opps by Marlon we got on our bikes for a fun ride down. The bikes were great and the ride is easy. Definitely mind your speed on some of those turns- especially as you get closer into town but overall an easy ride with amazing views along the way. Hit up Kula Lodge for breakfast and sit in the garden if you can- it's worth it. Don't expect to expend a lot of calories on this trip but don't skimp on the pancakes- just take a long walk on the beach once you return. It sounds like there might be a chance they don't get to offer the self guided tours much longer due to some locals not liking the bike traffic, so if you're on the fence, do it this visit as it might be the last time you can roll down the mountain without a guide.

The tour guide, Marlon, was great! The tip was well managed and a great experience! Sunrise over the volcano was beyond expectations.

Self-guided bike tour was incredible! The sun rise was the most beautiful sunrise I’ve ever seen in my life. It was definitely worth working up at 2:30 a.m. to get ready and drive to the meeting spot. Bring snacks, layers (it gets cold at the top), a backpack. I even brought thin gloves and my husband brought a beanie and was glad he did. Wear proper shoes like tennis shoes, not sandals. They provided rain coats but I brought my own with multiple layers. You take the layers off as you glide down (mostly downhill). Guides are sooo nice! Make sure to tip 20%! Some people didn’t tip and it made me sick. Tip all guides 20%. Stop at the Kula Lodge on the way down… It has the most beautiful gardens and view! (Sit by the window).  Food is really good too!! I loved the quiche. I loved the Cowboy town too and stopped at Espresso mafia and had the most amazing lavender honey latte. I loved it so much we drive 35 min. later that week to buy more.
