While I was originally hesitant with taking a "self-guided" bike tour down from Haleakala Crater, this tour turned out to be perfect for me, my husband and two teens! The tour started very early in Haiku, where we were fitted with helmets and a jacket (we all had our own jackets, but the added layer was very welcomed when we got to the top of the crater for sunrise.) Our driver and tour guide was Billy -- we loved his knowledge of the area, his thoroughness in explaining the bike route and his emphasis on bike safety -- and we appreciated his humor! It was so early in the morning, but Billy truly made the van ride to the top of the crater enjoyable. The sunrise was gorgeous -- a bucket list item for sure. It is very cold at the top waiting for the sun to come up, so I do recommend layers, a cap and gloves. Take a backpack to hold the layers that you will peel off as you make your way down the crater. The bikes provided are in excellent shape with very good brakes (as you will be breaking most of your way down.) Our tour was on a Sunday, so there were less people on the road, which was perfect. We never felt unsafe and the ride down was a thrill! (We have moderate bike riding experience.) And, while Billy is very detailed in covering the bike route back (and he even provides a few stories to help you remember the names of the roads), they do also provide you a map. The "self-guided" tour allowed us to go at our own pace and stop where we wanted, so it really did work out perfect. I highly recommend this tour! The early wake up call is so worth it!

Billy drove us to the top and had us laughing and awake for the entire 4am hour-long drive. The drive up to the summit was long and windy, so be prepared if you are prone to motion sickness. There were bathroom stops along the way. The sunrise was beautiful and absolutely worth the early wake up. I wore two layers of pants, a fleece top, winter coat and windbreaker. I also had a hat and mittens. It is quite cold and windy, so I would recommend wearing something like a windbreaker and mittens. The bike ride down was a lot of fun. There's more braking than actual pedaling. You are biking on a road with cars, but it was not very busy on the Monday morning. We stopped at Komoda bakery for donuts which were delicious. I would highly recommend doing this activity to anyone in Maui.

Tim drove us to the top. He was great- provided lots of history and information on the area. The hour long drive to the summit is very curvy- be prepared if you are prone to motion sickness. The sunrise was beautiful. The bike down from the top was fun, lots of braking but minimal physical work. You are biking on the road- our tour was on a Sunday which was great for minimal car traffic but everything was closed in the towns we biked through.
