We happened to be lucky enough to have a perfect sunrise! It was a religious experience. I have never seen anything like it in my life. To be above the clouds as the day begins is really something else. Honestly I was nervous about doing the bike ride. If you can ride a bike, you can do this excursion! I rode the brakes all the way down, but the views were amazing and it was a ton of fun! The company does a fantastic job from start to finish. Definitely put this on your to do list, but do it on a day when you have nothing else planned as you will be exhausted after getting up at 1:30 in the morning. Bring a snack and water for the bike ride.

We booked a trip with Bike Maui for sunrise at the crater. I booked about 6weeks prior to our trip. We were supposed to be at their shop at 3am, requiring us to leave our hotel around 1:30am. When I first booked the tour, I had emailed them some questions and they never got back to me. I was already unimpressed but there are not many tour companies who offer what we were looking for-4 of us wanted to ride up to the crater but 2 of us wanted to bike down. I kept my reservation, even though I was already underwhelmed with them. So the night before our trip, we all go to sleep very, very early due to us having to leave at 1:30am. At 10pm, I get a phone call, and a guy says “hi, your trip to the crater is cancelled so don’t come here” when I asked why he said “2 people called in sick. Don’t show up for your tour.” And he hung up. So while I understand that people get sick, I am assuming in this day and age, you have some type of backup plan, plus, you might have offered me some info like “we can rebook you” or at least “I’m sorry.” Yeah- no, nothing. We called them back in the morning and asked if we could rebook and they said they could accommodate us ten days later. While I would have loved the extra time in Maui, that would have put our vacation at about the 3 week mark and sadly that wasn’t going to happen this time around. No “I’m sorry” or anything. Just “no nothing available.” They did at least, promptly refund us our $800. We will be back in Maui, but we won’t be doing anything with Bike Maui.

We had an amazing time on this tour. We learned a ton from our tour guide, Marlin. The sunrise and bike experience was incredible. Felt safe the whole time!
