We did the 9am Discovery Whale Watching trip in early August 2018 and it was brilliant. Over the course of 4 hours skipper John and marine biologist Brit took us out into the bay, sought out many different species and gave commentary and information throughout. We saw Rissos dolphins, fin whales and numerous humpbacks and birds. The bay is just teaming with life. The boat wasn’t overly big, but also wasn’t overcrowded. The crew were very knowledgeable and helpful. The sea was pretty calm too. The only thing to note is that it is cold. We’d wrapped up but could have been better insulated. So glad we did this tour and will do it again if we return to Monterey.

We took a morning trip in mid-July with Discovery Whale Watch and it was brilliant. Firstly we were really pleased to be allocated to their smaller boat as our children are 15 and 18 and this boat was pretty much just for adults. Our guide was very knowledgeable and was really keen to give us lots of information about what we were seeing. Then we were so lucky to see not one but two feeding frenzies, when a large number of whales, sea lions and dolphins all converge to feed together. It was an absolutely unforgettable experience. It was very cold on the water and even though we were warned about this, we perhaps didn't wear quite enough layers. Even so our numb fingers were quite forgotten at the sight of a humpback lunging out of the water mouth agape. At one point we were surrounded by sea lions leaping and barking. This was a really great trip and I would recommend Discovery for their policy of keeping numbers on the boats relatively small and the friendly professional crew.

A fantastic trip, well worth the money. Be careful to plan your trip as we had to travel 130 miles to get there for a 0900 trip. Fantastically help full and friendly crew and so knowledgeable. We saw lots on our trip. Would recommend to anyone that was interested.
