First off, the positives. Booking over the phone was easy and the person was quite helpful. We booked several months (in Mar for an Aug visit) in advance to ensure we were able to do the package we wanted to do on the day we needed to raft. The bus ride to the launch point was quick and productive as Maddie explained all we needed to know for a fast departure from the shore. Once in the raft, our guide Derek was amazing. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and shared a ton of cool history and stories. Although the river is low in August, he made the rapids fun by going down backward or spinning around in them. It was a great routing plan in that at the end, we were right back close to West Glacier Village and walked to the shop front to drop our helmets and PFDs. Quick and easy!
Now the con: We arrived to the office to check in prior to our trip. There were two women behind the front counter. One was helping another family (and was very cheerful and friendly), the other woman, was sitting down and did not acknowledge us until she was told that we had not been helped. From the moment she began helping me to the end of our interaction I felt as if I was disrupting her personal time. She never smiled, made a rude comment under her breath about the fact that I booked so early that prices had changed and apparently that made her job of checking us in and charging us the balance (after deducting a gift certificate we had from an auction package) difficult for her?! She also commented that we should have already paid the balance but someone obviously didn't call us when they were supposed to. Finally, the other woman finished up with her customer and came over to assist. She was very friendly, quickly figured out what our balance was and charged me. She said they would email my receipt so I wouldn't have to wait while they figured out how to "enter" it in their system.
Then just before we were to get on the bus, the guides told us we couldn't take anything of value including phones or car keys but they would keep them at the front desk. I took my bag in and had to ask the same unhappy woman if they would keep it and, without looking up, she said, "you need to put everything but your keys in your car" - again so dang rude. Perhaps that is the policy but there are SO MANY different ways to communicate with customers that would be more productive.
I rarely write negative reviews and the rafting itself was very fun and enjoyable. I do see that the management at Glacier Raft Co reads and responds to the reviews which is why I am sharing this information. In an area that overwhelmingly greeted us with kindness, and the beauty that is GNP, it was very unfortunate to encounter someone who so clearly is not enjoying the fact that she is living and working in an area that is hands-down one of the most beautiful places in N. America.
