Your Apollo Theater Multimedia Walking Tour starts at the Apollo Theater 253 West 125th Street.

Harlem

The Harlem walking tour portion will feature pictures, video and sound presented at sights where history happened, special attention will be paid to music history and Harlem legends launched to stardom from the world famous Apollo Theater stage.

Apollo Theater

You will end with a back-stage tour of Apollo Theater where we will host our very own mock “Amateur Night at the Apollo.” You will have the chance to go on the Apollo Theater stage and perform in the very spot where greats like Michael Jackson, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald and many others started their careers – lets see if you have what it takes to be an Apollo star!

Your tour with Neale from the Harlem Heritage Tour will be one of the truly memorable highlights of your NY visit if you are from out of town. If you are a local, you will deepen your understanding of the role played by Harlem over the years in the New York story. Neale, your guide, is deeply knowledgeable about all aspects of Harlem from architectural gems to history to popular culture. He is born and raised in Harlem, and on every block, friends greet him warmly. If you are an outsider, you are drawn into the daily life as well as the history of the Harlem neighborhood. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. I hope to return to take in some of the many unique focussed tour Neale has developed. He truly is a cultural treasure. Don't miss this!

I really enjoyed this tour but the star feature was the guide himself who grew up in Harlem and is great fun. He really knew how to engage the group, bringing the history and culture of the neighbourhood to life. The music, videos (e.g. of Malcolm X speaking to crowds in Harlem in the 60s) and props also really make you feel like you're in the era as you walk around and enter these landmarks. It's a great mix of social, political and cultural history, but also what's happening in the neighbourhood now and how it's changed over the years. The Malcolm Shabazz market, MLK housing project and the Canaan Baptist Church (where Rev Dr Wyatt Tee Walker's son just happened to be!!!) were personal highlights. I cannot recommend this tour enough and will def be back to do one of the more in-depth tours!
