In deference to Lewis G. Carroll, Frieda Vizel may not be Alice and Williamsburgh is not Wonderland, but as we took this incredible walking tour, we indeed entered another world. Frieda's perspective is unique among any other guide. She herself went through a "glass", having been raised as a Hasid and then departed. That is what made this walking tour very unique. She showed us that world. We saw street life, very different from our own, yet we never left New York. She explained our religion, but from a vastly different realm. From Rugalach at the start to Kugel for "dessert", this tour offered an all encompassing perspective of a truly different lifestyle to us who can only envision it through our very personal looking-glass.

Of all the memories we have of our New York trip, none seems more vivid and lasting than Frieda guiding us through the Hasidic Satmar community in Williamsburg. They way she introduced us to this very special community was informative, fascinating and frankly touching. She managed to weave personal experiences and in-depth historical knowledge into a wonderful tapestry of inspiring tales and impressive facts. Her masterful storytelling was not just entertaining, but also managed to imbue us with a greater sense of tolerance for the different cultural lifestyles which we were able to catch glimpses of. Highly recommended!

This tour has a significant constraint: it doesn't involve planned interaction with Hasidim themselves. However, this is made known clearly in advance to prospective participants, so there's no false advertising. And afterward, this constraint will seem perfectly in keeping with who those folks want to be: cut off from the rest of us for very understandable reasons. We walked around portions of the Hasidic neighborhood and had the benefit of an insider's commentary, and it was marvelous. The tour was organized around a life-cycle theme. It wasn't merely an anthropological field trip, though informed by awareness of social-scientific as well as religious perspectives. The unexpected delight was Frieda's candor in responding to our many questions out of her own life story. I went with just my wife, but I'd love to take a bus full of my friends.
