Overview

Enjoy the darker side of Memphis and hear tales of the city's haunted heritage as told by professional storytellers. The city’s South Main Historic District – an eclectic, colorful area with some of the city’s oldest buildings – has a long history of sensational murders and ghostly activity. On this two-hour walking tour, you'll visit a number of haunted sites, including:
• The Orpheum Theater, home of "Mary," who has haunted performances since 1921
• The John Alexander Austin House, a Victorian era mansion haunted by star-crossed lovers
• The notorious Ernestine & Hazel's, a former brothel long recognized as one of the most haunted buildings in Memphis. We'll take you inside this creepy establishment, home to several ghosts as well as a haunted jukebox.

Within a few blocks there are four different parking garages, and several open-air parking lots. The closest garage to our location (just two blocks away) is at 149 Peabody Place between Second Street and BB King Blvd., next to the Hampton Inn. You can try your luck with on-street metered parking, too, on Second Street just south of Beale; on Beale between Front and Second; or along Peabody Place from Front to Fourth Street.

Backbeat was an exceptional tour guide. He was so knowledgeable. My daughter and I had a great experience, My daughter was so impressed so could remember word for word his presentation. She took her friend back through the tour. The tour was amazing.

Tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Memphis. Ghost stories were few and far between. It was more a historical tour than ghost tour. There was too much lag time and guide really didn't watch whole group but conversed with a couple of young women throughout. We wouldn't book this tour again as we've had better ones in Nashville and New Orleans.

Guide seemed very familiar with ghost history and times. Unfortunately, manny of the original structures were long gone, and very few "scary" areas. In past tours, the guide would provide water (very hot summers here June 25th was 94 degrees) but no water available unless you could find some to purchase. In fairness, we left half way into the tour because my wife was having contact lens issues with the heat. For the price, the history lesson was worth it.
