As part of the REI Adventure Tours, A Walk In The Woods are contracted for guide services. I have hiked hundreds of miles in the Great Smoky Mountains but very little beyond long day hikes. This guided hike along the AT was a dream come true. Don't get me wrong. This is a very difficult hike and one that has to be prepared for. The guides aided in the process by reviewing what gear was being taken (35 lbs. ) as well as insuring that you had the proper gear. The hike was nothing short of awesome. Mike and Erik are well informed not only about the trails and mountains but also about the natural plants and animals you encounter, so it's not only a hike but also an opportunity to learn about the area you are hiking in. A good part of the AT goes along ridge lines (but still lots of up and down mountain slopes), so there are views that rival anything else that can be seen in the Park from other areas. If you are up for a challenge and want to get out into nature for a number of days, then this is a trip you should not miss. But again the caution... do not go into without being in shape and prepared. ENJOY!!

We are a family of five, ages 47-8yo. We are not experienced hikers, but we wanted to really experience the Smoky Mountains up close and personally. We went on four-hour hike with Eric, who was fantastic. He has MILES of experience, tons of knowledge, and a contagious enthusiasm for being in the woods. He led us on a single-track trail that was not commonly used, and so had some challenging parts, but was not so difficult that anyone got exhausted. We saw some beautiful views, a waterfall, and walked through an area that had been burned in last year's fire - which was fascinating and sobering. My daughter (8yo) was in her element, and peppered our guide with comments and questions for the whole four hours. He responded with kindness and genuine interest, and made a fan for life (she has mentioned him several times since then). I highly recommend this experience for families - even for those who have little experience hiking.

My boyfriend and I needed someone to introduce us to the Smoky Mountains. This was our first time here. Blue (our guide) did so wonderfully. We had a beautiful hike, good conversation, and photography ideas! I highly recommend this company.
