Our guide, Eric, was terrific. We had a small tour, just the 3 of us. Thankyou to Hawaii Forest and Trail for opening up the tour for us. We went thru 3 private gates to get to areas not available to the general public. Eric pointed out the different plants and we even ate some berries. We saw a herd of sheep running up the mountain! Eric was very knowledgeable about Hawaiian history (Pauahi Bishop, the Kamehameha line) and Hawaiian Geology and plants. Eric was attentive to our condition and we took breaks when we got tired. The hike is easy to moderate, as advertised. There are some areas where folks who are not so limber may have some trouble (entering the lava tube by using a rope and walking backwards) but we did just fine (i'm in my late 50's and my husband is in his early 60's) Its a great experience to hear just the natural sounds of birds and wind in the trees while enjoying the beauty of the volcano. The hardest part of this activity was finding the pick up point at Queens marketplace. The pickup point is in the back of the complex, near a Thai restaurant. The Thai restaurant doesn't have a sign!!! There are no markings or words on the Thai Restaurant. we drove around 2 times before getting out and walking up the unmarked restaurant. When we saw the buddha statue in the window of the restaurant we figured we were in the right place.

My husband and I just did this tour. Our guide Justin was great! Knowledgeable and easy going. Very cool to travel onto private land and see the beautiful rainforest, craters and fissures on this volcano overlooking Kona. It didn’t feel like a long draining day driving, because the tour is really close to the check in location in Kona, and the hiking workout was great! We could see Maui in the distance and the elevation makes for perfect hiking conditions on a hot summer day. Loved exploring ‘Katie’s Cave’ ! The coffee tour to follow + lunch was a perfect way to follow. Thanks Hawai’i Forest and trail !
