We had limited time on Hilton Head between overnight stays in Beaufort SC and Savannah GA. Decided to visit the Coastal Discovery Museum for an overview of life in Hilton Head and we signed up for the Honey Horn guided tour. Our volunteer docent was Ken.
Overall, this was a good experience; the museum has some great exhibits (including a temporary art exhibit on coral) and the grounds are large and diverse. Ken was knowledgeable.
However, our 60-minute tour turned into a 2-hour tour thanks to a larger-than-expected crowd (while we signed up weeks in advance, others were able to join at the very last minute even though the tour had technically already reached capacity). In the end, I'm not sure we learned anything via the guided tour that was different from a self-guided tour, and it certainly took longer.
I would recommend looking at some of the other tours if you'll be in the area; the Gullah tour in particular sounded intriguing. And definitely see the grounds, but there's plenty of signage if you want to do it on your own.
Also I REALLY wish they had a small cafe on-site for lunch...even just some minimal take-out (salads, sandwiches). That would have been a great way to end our tour, and a good way for this site to make some additional $$ as well!
