The drive to and from New Orleans to Honey Island was quite interesting and informative as our driver/guide provided us with a lot of information about the city and surrounding area. He told us quite a bit about how Hurricane Katrina had affected people's lives, including his own, as well as the geography, physical infrastructure and economy.
The tour was enjoyable, with a number of interesting things to see and learn about. I think I preferred the air boat swamp tour I took two years ago as I felt there was more variety in the area covered. Having said that, I think this tour is still a worthwhile choice.
Our driver/guide was quite good, but I wish I could have heard more about what he had to tell us - other tour members were talking loudly and drowning him out. I also thought he demonstrated considerable patience and restraint dealing with a number of young children who would not follow the rules re siting down properly, not standing up and keeping their hands away from the railings of the boat. Even some other guests asked the children to sit down as their own parents took almost no initiative in this regard. I know I and my travelling companion were very nervous during most of the tour as we were concerned that the children would be injured or fall out of the boat. Two hours is a long time to ask a young child to sit still, and alligator sightings only take up part of the tour. The rest of the tour, while interesting to many adults, could get a bit boring for little ones. People with young children considering taking this tour, may want to keep this in mind.
I highly recommend Honey Island Swamp Tours. Pick up at our hotel was right on time, the swamp tour itself was excellent with a knowledgeable guide, and drop off right at our door. I inadvertently dropped my cellphone in the van and tbey promptly returned it to my hotel's front desk.
This entire experience was great. The van pick up and drop off at our hotel was on time. We drove out to the Honey Island boats and was divided into groups and put on a boat. Our boat driver and guide was wonderful and so full of interesting information. He guided our boat up into areas for better views and to get closer to animals we saw. We saw several alligators and he fed them marshmallows and called them up to the boat for better pictures and viewing. We saw wild boar - big and small - and fed them marshmallows. We saw snakes and turtles and ducks and herons. The swamp or bayou was actually lovely and green and peaceful - not expected. The entire trip was very enjoyable and highly recommended.
