Black Hills Balloons will text and email the day before the flight before 6.30 pm for a flight status update and weather check.

What To Expect

Black Hills National Forest

Once the balloon is ready, you’ll gently take to the skies for an approximate 1-hour flight over the Black Hills National Forest. If you are new to ballooning, you’ll be surprised at the silence and serenity you’ll find high above the treetops. It’s truly magical. Upon landing, the ground crew will pack the balloon while you and your pilot celebrate the flight with complimentary champagne, light snacks and a story about the origin of hot air ballooning. Flights depart at sunrise and are weather dependent and always at the discretion of your experienced pilot.

This was a magical experience! Damien and his crew handled everything with grace and good humor and made what was already amazing even better. It was a pretty cold morning, but after we got into the air it warmed up - the ambient air itself was warmer and the heat from the burner helped as well. Not much wind, so we hovered a lot instead of gliding along, but that was fine. The champagne and snacks post flight, with anecdotes about the history of ballooning was interesting and fun as well. One thing to note - I'm in my early 60's and in pretty good physical shape, but it was a bit of a challenge to get into and out of the balloon. Would absolutely recommend doing this if you're in the Black Hills!

Incredible adventure. The view was unlike any other. The crew was hilarious and thoughtful. Definitely a must when you come to the Black Hills.
