First, a warning to all you "older folks" who think you can handle anything. The tour description says clearly, if you have leg, knee or hip issues, this tour might not be for you. I must have missed that part, and it is absolutely accurate.
Our guide Ryan was exceptional, friendly and funny, knowledgeable and helpful.
At the beginning of the hike he loaded us up with backpacks, lunch, water and snacks to fortify us for the adventure, and gave us a quick overview of what we could expect.
Away we went, down a mountain trail into the jungle.
In my mind, I had envisioned a leisurely stroll through a flowery glade where I could take lots of photos. What it turned in to was (in my 71 year old opinion) a 4 hour iron man competition, ending with a steep uphill trail of switchbacks roughly the height of an 11 story building.
You might think I'm complaining - I am not. Ryan was careful to keep us all on the trail, narrate the natural and unique features of the jungle, the ecological challenges it faces and Hawaiian laws that protect certain species. He provided rest spots when he deemed it necessary. A beautiful Air Force couple took it on themselves to be our guardians, and during the final ascent, Ryan was right with me and my wife, helping for the final push to the summit...
Any difficulties I had were the result of my overestimating my capabilities and endurance. Ryan and the other members of the expedition were absolutely kind and helpful, and I cannot recommend the tour more highly. Just make sure you're in shape...
