Joshua Tree National Park

Big Morongo Canyon Preserve
Nestled among the Little San Bernardino Mountains in the Sand to Snow National Monument, the desert oasis at Big Morongo Canyon is one of the 10 largest cottonwood and willow riparian habitats in California. The upstream end of the canyon lies in the Mojave Desert, while its downstream portion opens into the Colorado Desert. There are numerous trails to walk and hike, including a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through the marsh and riparian habitats. At 31,000 acres with elevations ranging from 600 feet on the canyon floor to 3000 feet at the top of the ridge, this diverse landscape has been an important part of the Morongo Basin’s natural and cultural history for almost two billion years.

Zach was an excellent tour guide, with a professional background in forestry, EMT and military. In a small group we toured the Joshua Tree Park learning about the plants and animals with many photo ops. Don’t take your car rental here. It’s off- road and not for the regular auto driver to negotiate.

We did the Sunset Joshua Tree National Park Tour. You are picked up in Palm Desert, stop at the San Andreas Fault along the way, and then taken to the national park to the hilltop for sunset. It was a lot of fun and our Tour Guide Jeff shared information about history, geography, geology, biology, movies, etc. The only criticism I had is that the van they pick you up (before you get to the hummer) in is pretty dated. I considered adding our photo, but I don't want to ruin the surprise of how spectacular it is at the top.

We were picked up at our hotel in an air conditioned hummer and taken across the San Andreas fault line to Yucca Valley where we waited at a coffee shop while Jeff went to get the open air hummer. What an adventure. Jeff is entertaining, the hummer was way outside my comfort zone (I drive a Prius) but I loved it. The Joshua trees are beautiful and at one point a coyote stopped to stare at us. We saw a gorgeous sun set, turned around and saw a full moon coming up. You don't experience that very often. Jeff had selected several music selections that went so well with the scenery. Thoroughly enjoyed and can't wait to go back.
