What To Expect
1
Joshua Tree
Before you enter the park, you'll pass through the town of Joshua Tree. It's full of quaint little shops and restaurants and is the perfect place to pick up a snack or a souvenir before or after your trip through the park.
2
Intersection Rock
Intersection Rock is considered to be a sort of hub within Joshua Tree. Thanks to its towering size, it can be seen from a great distance and casts a striking silhouette against the blazing desert sky. It's also a hugely popular climbing spot, featuring numerous different climbing routes with names like Knuckle Cracker, Ignorant Photons from Pluto, and Sympathy to the Devil.
3
Cap Rock Trail
Cap Rock is a strange sight, featuring a small boulder almost impossibly perched atop a larger rock formation. Here, you'll find a quick quarter-mile trail chock full of information about the local flora.
4
Lost Horse Valley
Lost Horse Valley is a sweeping desert valley that gets its name from some of the McHaney Gang's misdeeds back in the days of the Wild West. You'll hear all about that as you drive through this valley, including what one overconfident miner did to try to get his stolen horses back!
5
Lost Horse Mine
The Lost Horse Mine Loop Trail leads to a truly unique spot: the remains of one of the most successful gold mines in the region. In addition to these ruins, this four-mile trail also features some magnificent desert flora and more than a few excellent vistas. If you're visiting in the summer, be prepared for a lack of shade on this trail.
6
Queen Valley Road
Another abandoned mine waits in Queen Valley. The gold found in this mine was the motive behind at least one murder and a whole lot else.
7
Skull Rock
This iconic desert granite formation looks uncannily like a human skull. It's easily accessible from the roadside, and is also the trailhead for an easy 2-mile trail that's among the most popular hiking trails in the whole park.
8
Sky's The Limit Observatory and Nature Center
Sky's The Limit Observatory and Nature Center is a phenomenal spot to learn not just about the flora and fauna of Joshua Tree, but also about the stars above. As a dark sky area, Joshua Tree makes for some seriously impressive stargazing, so try to stick around after dark if you can!
9
Oasis Visitor Center
The Oasis Visitor Center is the last stop along the main tour route. It sits in the town of Twenty-Nine Palms, not far from where you began your tour. If you'd prefer to continue journeying through Joshua Tree, you can also follow the detour route, which proceeds south through the rest of the park and exits out the southern gate.
10
Palm Springs Visitor Center
Your bonus tour of Palm Springs begins at the Palm Springs Visitor Center. From here, you'll cruise through this picturesque resort town and learn about all the hottest spots to visit.
11
Palm Springs Art Museum
The Palm Springs Art Museum is a must-visit spot for lovers of any kind of art. This museum boasts a collection of over 10,000 pieces of modern and contemporary art, photography, glass art, architecture, and design.
12
Palm Springs Walk of Stars
Move aside, Hollywood! The Palm Springs Walk of the Stars honors all the big names who have lived in Palm Springs over the years. It has names you might not expect, like former presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Gerald Ford!
13
Palm Springs Air Museum
Home to one of the largest collections of flyable World War II planes, the Palm Springs Air Museum is an essential stop for any history or aviation buffs. In addition to plenty of World War II exhibits, the museum also features aircraft from the Korean and Vietnam wars.
14
Coachella Valley
The Coachella Valley Preserve might be only 16 miles from the famous music festival destination, but it offers something completely different. Here, visitors will find the beautiful Thousand Palms Oasis, a lush slice of nature with plenty of stunning hiking trails and picnic areas.

We were gobsmacked with how beautiful this national Park is. Using the self-driving Action Tour Guide app, we had a tour guide narrating our entire 3 hour drive through the park. With GPS it guided us the entire way, sharing history, trivia, and information about what we were seeing. Highly recommend for either driving thru the park or stopping to hike the trails. Also recommend buying your park pass online to beat the lines. We simply showed our QR code from our phone and we were on our way.

Thank you so much for your feedback! I’m delighted that my tour of Joshua Tree added to your learning and that you enjoyed it. I also have 100 other self-guided tours for other parks, scenic drives, cities, and historic sites in the US — hopefully, you’ll get the chance to try them next time! Also, to remind you, the tour you bought is yours for a lifetime. So, you can listen to it at home or on your next visit.

A must see experience when in the area. You definitely feel transported into another world. It a park you can spend 2-3 hours just driving through or a full/multiple days hiking along the trails. Suggest bringing a camera, good shoes and making it a leisurely day. Just driving through you will wish you’d planned the time. To related recommendations - stop at the Joshua Tree welcome/cultural center. Super helpful. Tell them how long you have and they can help you with the most important sites and route. Also I purchased an audio tour guide for $15, an app from Action Tour Guide (ATG). When driving through the park it knows your geo-position and fills you in on related information about the park; history, geology, sites. Download the tours ahead of time as cell service is minimal. A good day!!

We enjoyed having this audio tour in the background as we drove through the park. We learned a few things along the way and it helped us make sure we were following the correct roads to certain sites since we didn't have data inside the park. The tour works perfectly offline as long as you download it beforehand so we felt like we were in good hands during the trip.
