This was by far the highlight of our cruise to Alaska. We lucked out with perfect weather, it was sunny and surprisingly warm even up on the glacier for the dog sledding portion. You’re not allowed to take anything up in the helicopter with you besides your phone and a water bottle (don’t forget this so you can fill it with fresh glacier water!). They have lockers to lock your personal items in to keep them secure. Our helicopter pilot was an extremely great pilot. I unfortunately can’t remember her name. The ride was smooth and the scenery was unmatched. You see these massive snow topped mountains everywhere in Alaska but there’s nothing like seeing them up close and personal from the air. I was placed in the front seat next to the pilot so I had a great view and got to watch her use the controls which was awesome. Once we got to Hubert glacier the whole experience just kept getting better. We were met by a really cool guy who gave us an overview of general information about the dog camp. Then our family group was led to our musher. We were with Josie. She was amazing. She introduced us to her dogs, explained the sled and let us take our places and then hooked up the dogs. They were barking and pulling at their ties so bad you could tell they were ready to go and run. There’s no way that anyone can think that these animals don’t love this when you see how excited they get as they’re being hitched up. Finally it was time to go and Josie said the magic word and the dogs took off, literally smiling and yipping in excitement. I can tell you that there is nothing in my life that I have experienced as phenomenal as gliding over the top of a glacier being pulled by a team of sled dogs. It was amazing. We did a large loop on the glacier and she stopped multiple times so we could switch places in the sled, get photos, pet the dogs and ask questions. They have a professional photographer that takes photos of you during the ride and you can purchase them before you leave the glacier. They prefer cash so bring up to $50 or a credit card. Then it was time to get back in the helicopter and head to the ice part of the glacier for the ice walk. This was cool (literally) it was freezing on this part of the glacier. The views were so majestic. There’s no other blue like glacier blue water, which is so clean and refreshing (don’t forget your water bottle). After our ice walk we headed back to town in the helicopter getting outstanding views of Mendenhall glacier from the air on the return. We got our stuff, gave them back theirs (shoe covers) and boarded the bus to head back to the port. Everyone with this company was personable, professional, nice and fun. You can tell everyone loves working here and they run a really exceptional operation. We felt safe the whole time, and it really was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. I can’t recommend them enough. It’s pricy but 200% worth it.
