Overview

This wildlife viewing excursion takes you on a journey to see two of the major highlights in Southeast Alaska. You will be guided to the Mendenhall Glacier for a 45 minute self-exploration followed by our wildlife whale watching tour. Once you have had a chance to explore the glacier park on your own, we will take you to the whale watching harbor where you will come aboard one of our state-of-the-art vessels to search for majestic Humpback Whales and other water wildlife we may find along the way. Our expert captains and naturalists are so familiar with these amazing creatures that we can actually guarantee you will see whales in their natural habitat from a safe distance. Our boats are equipped with restrooms and heated cabins to make this journey extra comfortable. Our fleet of fast jet boats all have plenty of outdoor deck space so you can choose to watch the wildlife in the open air or from the comfort of the cabin. What To Expect

Alaska Tales

Our tour representatives will meet you at the main cruise ship terminal and check you in for the excursion. You will board a transport bus with a guide that will bring you to the Mendenhall Glacier for 45 minute stop. Here you will be able to explore the area on your own. The parking lot is a very short walking distance to magnificent photo opportunities, hiking trails, visitor's center, and bear viewing platforms raised above the salmon spawning streams. Once the glacier exploration is complete, we will transport you to the local boat harbor. Where you will be met by our captain and crew who will walk you past the fishing fleet to board one of our state-of-the-art boats built for wildlife viewing. The boats are equipped with restrooms, heated cabins, large windows, comfortable seats, and outdoor decks for viewing. We will then begin a 2 hour journey in search of Humpback Whales and other water wildlife native to the area. You can sit back and relax while taking in the beautiful scenery on the boat ride or assist us in searching for signs of whales including water spouts, tail dives, and whales jumping out of the water. No trip is the same as mother nature decides what to provide for each tour. Your naturalist and crew will interpret what you are seeing and explain the behaviors of the massive and beautiful creatures. At the end of the trip the captain will make an announcement and we will return back to the harbor. Feel free to enjoy a complimentary snack and beverage as you soak up your remaining time on the water. Your driver will meet you at the harbor and bring you back through town to the main cruise ship terminal in downtown Juneau where the excursion started.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center

While at the Mendenhall Glacier, you will have an opportunity to visit the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center if you choose to. The center houses exhibits and elevated views of the glacier.

Mendenhall Glacier

You will have an opportunity to explore the area around the Mendenhall Glacier, which includes walking trails and views of the Mendenhall Glacier.

This was a great experience. The glacier visit was beautiful with how close we were able to get. The waterfall background and the salmon stream were wonderful additions to the stop. The whale watching, however, was phenomenal. The crew knew the names of all the whales, positioned the boat so that everyone on board got good views, and explained when and why the whales would dive so we could get some wonderful videos and pictures. On the ride back we saw even more whales and a few seals goofing around in the water (we watched one fight with about 10 gulls over a fish). All in all a great experience.

Alaska Tales in Juneau, Alaska was an amazing experience…. Prior to booking I was not really looking for whale watching, just the glaciers. The sales pitch at city center (Nick) was very informative and got us to book both, and I am so glad we did. The crew (James, Steph and Kristen) were amazing. Saw lots of whales and everyone on the boat were enjoying the experience. They are very accommodating with heater in the cabin and several places on the boat to watch if you want to be outside (bow, top and back). I will definitely recommend this tour.

Captain James did amazing. He knew right where to go to see whales. We saw a couple on the way out and kept going to his known place. So glad we did we all watched whales, got pictures, and had a blast. Kristen and Steph did a great job explaining to everyone and watching out for more whales while telling everyone where to look. Loved how they used clock terms to tell everyone where to look instead of using marine terms not everyone is familiar with. So glad we booked this trip.
