Kentucky Derby Museum
Located in Louisville, the Kentucky Derby is one of America’s most exciting horse racing events in the world and takes place at Churchill Downs Racetrack. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and is known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports" because of the actual duration of the race.  Some like to call the race "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the Derby winner. When you visit, you will enjoy a self-guided tour of the Kentucky Derby Museum, which includes two levels of family-friendly interactive permanent & temporary exhibits.  Ten minutes past each hour, you will have the opportunity to see "The Greatest Race," an 18-minute movie about the Kentucky Derby and its history, a story that puts you right in the heart of the first Saturday of May.  Immediately following "The Greatest Race" and at 30-minutes past every hour, you will experience an exhilarating 30-minute guided walking tour of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack and witness where some of the most famous teams of jockeys and Thoroughbreds competed such as Secretariat, Barbaro, Big Brown, California Chrome and the most recent Triple Crown winner in 2015- American Pharoah.

The Kentucky Derby museum contains a great deal of information about the Derby -- it's history, past winners, and what it takes to create a successful race. The short film in the round is excellent and not to be missed. However, what really made our visit was our tour with Kiana. She ushered us around the grounds and provided a lot of really interesting information, while being charming and funny. We were there the weekend after the running of the Derby, so things were very quiet. I can't imagine how busy it must be in the weeks before!

Really had a nice day on Saturday the 11th: we drove to Louisville and visited Churchill Downs! My second visit but Peggy’s first. They have changed the museum a bit but it was still fun to walk thru. This time we took the walking tour and learned a bit about the downs. On this trip I was able to see the trophy given to the horse who won the Triple Crown (the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont): impressive. The highlight of the day was watching one of the races: I have always loved being on the final stretch and watching those magnificent creatures straining for all they’re worth to get to the line first. It was beautiful! (My pick came in dead last…groan)

For three adults, two horse crazy kids, and one pre-teen, this was a great stop. The museum is interactive and great for little ones. Plenty of information about everything involved with horse racing. This museum is a two story building that is handicap accessible with an elevator for wheelchairs and strollers. They offer a short movie and different walking tours throughout the day. Lots to see and experience, I recommend getting there early and then stay for the races next door. There is also a gift shop.
