Kentucky Derby Museum
Located in Louisville, the Kentucky Derby is one of America’s most exciting horse racing events in the world and takes place at Churchill Downs Racetrack. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and is known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports" because of the actual duration of the race.  Some like to call the race "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the Derby winner. When you visit, you will enjoy a self-guided tour of the Kentucky Derby Museum, which includes two levels of family-friendly interactive permanent & temporary exhibits.  Ten minutes past each hour, you will have the opportunity to see "The Greatest Race," an 18-minute movie about the Kentucky Derby and its history, a story that puts you right in the heart of the first Saturday of May.  Immediately following "The Greatest Race" and at 30-minutes past every hour, you will experience an exhilarating 30-minute guided walking tour of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack and witness where some of the most famous teams of jockeys and Thoroughbreds competed such as Secretariat, Barbaro, Big Brown, California Chrome and the most recent Triple Crown winner in 2015- American Pharoah.
Cancellation Policy

We had a great experience here at the Kentucky Derby Museum! The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, very well-educated on the history as well. We learned a lot on the general admission walking tour. You could just imagine what it would be like to be there the day of the Kentucky Derby after experiencing the tour and the movie. Our kids really enjoyed the video game horses you could race on as well. The gift shop had great discounts and very friendly staff as well. The cafe was also very good, clean, and reasonably priced. I recommend the quesadilla if you have children. It is $4, and you can choose from cheese, or add chicken or bacon for the same price. It is a good portion size, and comes with sour cream & salsa. My son loved it! The cheeseburger was also good, as well as the turkey club. There is also a bar in the cafe where you can book a tasting, or just relax and enjoy a drink of your choice. Highly recommended museum!!

I purchased two “skip the line” tickets to this attraction for $ 34.00+ and when we arrived we were told that they were not honoring them and we still had to go through the line. Nor was there any mention of advance sign up for the Churchill Downs walking tour (which was supposed to be included in the admission). If you miss the advance sign up, you don’t get the tour. My husband and I (both seniors) specifically purchased the skip the line passes , so he would not have to wait in line due to having had knee surgery and still having trouble standing for long periods. Skip this purchase, buy your tickets directly from the Kentucky Derby Museum website and get accurate information- as well as save money if you are a senior, senior admission will only cost $28.00 for two tickets. Museum was good but don’t waste your $ purchasing tickets through TripAdvisor.

The staff didn’t recognize or honor the “Skip the line” portion of the ticket, which was fun but we waited in a very long line around noon, only to be told to come back at 4pm for the only tour left. We paid basically to walk around the museum only and even the 18 min. movie was a 1.5 hour wait. Maybe it was just an “off” day, but it was poorly run and many people in line were equally frustrated if they bought ahead like us.

We are so sorry this happened to you. This is not the experience we want our guests to have. Please contact our Director of Visitor Services at [email protected] so we can better understand what happened and make sure this doesn't happen in the future. Due to COVID-19 capacity guidelines set by the state, we can only allow so many people on a tour and in the theatre for the movie at one time. Local spring break has spiked the number of guests we are seeing on a daily basis, and we apologize that this affected your visit.
