Parking is available in front of the Museum. On race days during the Churchill Downs Racetrack events, there will be a charge for parking in this lot.

What To Expect

Kentucky Derby Museum

Located in Louisville, the Kentucky Derby is one of America’s most exciting horse racing events in the world and takes place at Churchill Downs Racetrack. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and is known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports" because of the actual duration of the race. Some like to call the race "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the Derby winner. When you visit, you will enjoy a self-guided tour of the Kentucky Derby Museum, which includes two levels of family-friendly interactive permanent & temporary exhibits. Ten minutes past each hour, you will have the opportunity to see "The Greatest Race," an 18-minute movie about the Kentucky Derby and its history, a story that puts you right in the heart of the first Saturday of May. Immediately following "The Greatest Race" and at 30-minutes past every hour, you will experience an exhilarating 30-minute guided walking tour of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack and witness where some of the most famous teams of jockeys and Thoroughbreds competed such as Secretariat, Barbaro, Big Brown, California Chrome and the most recent Triple Crown winner in 2015- American Pharoah.

Nice tour but tour guide was in a rush to get it over with. Main thing was being rushed in the gift shop. We had taken several pictures and wanted to purchase the pictures. The staff printed 2 of the pictures and we ask for some of the others to be printed and they said we will just email the rest to you since you are purchasing some. I gave them my email address and we never got the pictures emailed to us. They had a long line and wanted to get us out of the shop. Very angry that they would not let us purchase the other pictures and did not email the pictures they promised. I would have gladly purchased them.

Visited the Museum. It was something I had to do on my short visit. The exhibits are really nice. Great outing for families. Getting to go inside of Churchill Downs was also a treat. Different perspective from watching the derbies on tv. Makes you imagine what it’s like to be there on a race day. And I can’t wait to go back. The staff at the museum are super nice people.

We are not Kentucky Derby watchers at all. We weren't too sure we would enjoy this museum. But I must say, this was one of the highlights of our trip to Louisville! It was very informative and interesting. We will be watching the Kentucky Derby next May! Changed our minds about going to this museum. Pretty much a must if visiting Louisville!
