We picked the Ketchikan Duck Tour as it looked a good introduction to Ketchikan and for the unusual experience of travelling in an amphibious vehicle; it met our expectations on both counts. I recommend taking the earliest tour, as we did, because we found the guide’s commentary and advice helpful in planning the rest of our limited time in Ketchikan. There were duck whistles available on board which provided amusement for all participants involved. I took one home to my young granddaughter who took great joy in producing various sounds including a loud “daddy” quack and a softer “mummy” quack. Sadly, it was damaged during washing and rendered mute. My granddaughter would plead with me to fix it which I could not do. Other whistles didn’t do the job so I emailed Alaska Amphibious Tours to explain my dilemma and ask if I could purchase another whistle. I had a quick reply from Dominic Farley (General Manager), to quote: “Let’s put some quack back in her life. We would love to see a smile back on her face. Please give us a mailing address and we will send you one as soon as possible”. Soon after that a package arrived, all the way from Alaska to Australia! I did not tell my granddaughter what was in the package but let her help me open it. Her look of surprise and joy was priceless as she saw the contents. “Look Nannna, I’ve got four duck whistles!” Despite her parents’ lack of appreciation for the new (loud) acquisition she and her baby sister have enjoyed these gifts immensely. So, a big “Thank You” Dominic Farley and Alaska Amphibious Tours; you brought big smiles to the faces of two little girls. We thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend the Ketchikan Duck Tour anyway, but Dominic Farley’s kind gesture was a lovely, big bonus over and above this.

This was a cruise ship shore excursion for us. Our driver and tour guide were both excellent. It was great being able to tour the town on land and by water. We had a great time and our 9 year old grandson loved it too!

Duck Tour is a great thing to do in many cities. It was a good cruise excursion in a small town. The Duck Tour in Ketchikan is limited only by what Ketchikan has to offer. (Let’s face it: Ketchikan isn’t DC or Boston etc.) The driver and narrator worked hard to be amusing - and succeeded. Ketchikan has an interesting history; they did a nice job of bringing out that history. Would have rated it a five except for one thing. This was the first (of four that I’ve taken) Duck Tour that sold the “quackers” separately. You’d think they could add the $2.50 into the overall cost. Other excursions in town essentially do that. (The float plane to Misty Fjords, for example, gives you a photo and certificate on your way out). Selling the quackers made the tour operator look cheap and wasted time better spent on the road looking at the town. People that don’t want the quackers won’t take them, so it won’t cost them anything extra and may actually save them money.
