We were picked up at the pier in downtown KETCHICAN. The van ride took 30 mins(!!!) to a rustic motel and launch site (aka a āresortā)on an ocean tributary. A bit of standing around while they divided up groups. The e-bikes were simple ācity bikesā and weāre told the bike portion would be about 5 miles. Iām thinking. Lame. We had to push the bikes up a steep hill before starting our ride on the main road. Nothing to see hereā¦WAIT FOR IT. DONāt give up yet⦠finally we make a turn onto stretch of road that passed small waterfalls and cliff side homes; no two alike. The road ended at a trailhead and thatās where it started to get real. Seriously, Iāve done so epics hikes around the world in stunning natural environments. I was floored by the beauty of the Tongass Nat Forrest! Weāre told itās the oldest living temperate rainforest on earth 17,000,000 acres and the third largest rainforest on earth behind the Congo and Amazon. I believe it. I expected Hobbits to lunge at us from every tree stump. An intricately built staircase of trails took us to a stream leading to a beautiful waterfall where we were mesmerized by the salmon giving their last leap to reach their birthplace. Mary Grace (love her!) had an eye out for bears at this hot spot. Well, we did not see one on this particular day but we were taken in by her knowledge on all the other things that could kill us in the forest. The hike was not long about 2 miles (lots of twists & turns) . I will never forget it because it was utterly stunning, vibrant and surprisingly quiet. We had the trail to ourselves. We returned to our bikes and took a diversion on the journey home to absorb the feeling of the local hood. When we return to the dock, we were surprised to find a wonderful little spread of local goodies for a light snack. We were able to try local salmon, salmon spread, and Irish coffee. I completely mis-judged the expectations. The slow start and long drive was a dragā¦donāt worry youāre going to love it!
