Sam and Tom were a blast! They were great at educating our tour group about the ecological environment. They also gave us plenty of opportunities for photo ops.

Our family of eight was on the NCL Jewel Northbound Alaska first week in July. This excursion included passengers from the age of 11 to 71. Everyone enjoyed the excursion very much. We were met at the visitor center and boarded a bus driven by Ed. Ed gave us a very interesting city tour as he drove us to the jeep pickup point. I cannot say enough about how knowledgeable Ed is about the Ketchikan. He shared the history and information about today's life. Thanks Ed great start to the excursion. Upon arrival our guide Tim went over the beginning information. We then were assigned the jeeps. Since we had a party of eight we received two jeeps. We then began the caravan back to two logging roads. The roads were rough enough to give the feel of off-road but not too rough to be unsafe. Tim used walkie-talkies to keep us informed of what we were seeing. He did make stops along the way to change drivers if anyone desired. Alaska was in a drought and heat-wave during our visit so there were not a lot of mud. I could see where this would be possible during normal Ketchikan weather. We then stopped at a Lake Harriet dock and boarded a 37 foot, 20 passenger canoe to row across the lake for a nature walk and snacks. Our guide Tess made this a very enjoyable journey. She was excellent assisting anyone that needed it. In fact our canoe had a gentleman with a walker. Tess was able to help him get in and out of the canoe so that he could enjoy it also. The lake was very smooth and did not take extreme effort to paddle across. Upon arriving on the other side of the lake we enjoyed snacks of Smoked Salmon Dip, Fresh made preserves, and Clam Chowder. There was coffee or hot Chocolate to drink. It was suggested to place an Andes Mint Chocolate in the cup and then add ½ coffee and ½ hot chocolate. This was really yummy. After the snack we took a short nature walk and then canoed back. There Ed picked us up in the bus and returned to the ship. This excursion may be done in reverse to get the jeeps back to the garage. I would highly recommend this excursion for anyone wanting a little activity without being too strenuous. Ed, Tim, and Tess did an outstanding job making our day very enjoyable.
