The Koloa Zipline experience was an awesome afternoon of zipping through the trees and seeing amazing views. There were a total of 8 lines, each with varying heights, distance, and speeds. The best line was the one where you feel like you’re just barely squeezing between the trees - felt like a flying scene from a kung fu action sequence. Other views included the mountains, fields, and reservoir.
Our Koloa zipline guides were Shawn, Claire, and Hazard (yes, jokes were made about the irony of his name). They were a fun team to spend the afternoon with and they also provided us with all the safety instructions. There were three different positions that you could ride the zipline: traditional sitting, “Superman” (face front, on your belly), upside down. The options varied depending on each line.
This was the first time I tried the Superman and upside down methods. At first, it was difficult for me to take the step off the platform psychologically (especially the upside down position), but the team helps make it easier and encourages you to get the experience. By the end of the day, the Superman position was my favorite because you get to see the best views and have the most control on steering. Although the upside down position was definitely interesting (and nerve wrecking at first), I feel like the views aren’t as great because personally I was focusing more on making sure I did the correct actions.
Although the team repeats the instructions on how to stop for each position several times, sometimes it’s hard to remember exactly what to do when the time comes since you’re focused on the sights and taking the experience in. Definitely ask the Koloa team any questions when it’s your turn.
I highly recommend wearing clothes with pockets that can be zipped or a pouch to hold your phone. Although lockers are provided for personal items, these get left at the set up area where you get your gear. The team doesn’t have other cameras during the experience to take photos of you and your party, but they will gladly take photos if you provide them your phone. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our phone up to the lines and don’t have photos from our experience.
