Awful experience on the Ocean Spirit with the Lanai Snorkel Sail excursion from Norwegian Sun. The experience itself was underwhelming as the snorkel sight was a man-made reef that was very disappointing. The area was close to shore and in a high traffic area. Not the beautiful reef we expected, very little color. There was Sea turtles which was nice but other than that there were some plain uninteresting fish and very little else. What made it an unpleasant experience was the captain of the ship, I believe his name was Chris, an older guy with a young crew. The young crew were great and gave some interesting insight and were helpful. The captain a different story. He was an arrogant smart mouth with little people skills. We had ordered ahead of time (twice to make sure) for the meal, as I have Celiac disease and am highly allergic to gluten. They assured us there was no problem but when the meal came about the Captain had zero knowledge of Gluten free and the danger of cross-contamination. He had wheat buns touching all the meat and when I told him I could not eat if wheat had contaminated the meat in any way, he had a blank look and had only a small cold veggie burger he located and said that was it, not safe to eat as he really knew nothing. After I moved on in line he mocked me to the other guests by saying "be careful people you might get cross-contaminated". What a jerk, that was not necessary and he should not be serving food if he has no concept about allergies and cross contamination. Lousy snorkel location and a captain that should be demoted to swabbing the deck.

I am so sorry to hear about your disappointing experience, but very much appreciate your feedback which has forwarded to our Commercial Operations Director. From your description of the experience, I can only assume that weather may have prevented you from going to Lanai, as they are no man-made reefs there or anywhere here, but seeing turtles would be very rare over at Lanai and it isn't near any traffic. I know you booked through NCL Sun, so there is no way for us to provide any type of refund. But I would be happy to offer you a gift certificate for another trip should you plan to visit the island again in the future. You may contact me directly at [email protected] if that would be of interest.

The captain, staff and boat were all professional and great. Our only issue, but a huge one, was that this is promoted as a snorkeling trip to Lanai. We didn't go to Lanai but to Lahaina. The wind was too strong to go to Lanai. Upon checking in, we were not informed of this likelihood nor possibility. The captain and staff should have informed us and given us the option prior to departing, of this fundamental change in plans, that we only learned once we left.

Aloha Paul and thank you for your feedback. I did speak with our port captain, and even though it was windy in Ma'alaea Harbor, it was not a given at the time of departure that the channel wasn't crossable. It's very difficult as times here on Maui to know what the winds may be like from one area to the next as it can change quite quickly. I am sorry to hear that Lanai wasn't doable that day and I am happy to provide you with a partial refund. It does not appear to be the fault of the captain on that day based on prevalent conditions at that time. Please feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected] to discuss a partial refund.

Amazing experience. We’ve been to Hawaii 6 times and this was the first time seeing spinner dolphins. The snorkeling was great and the captain and crew were wonderful.
