What To Expect

Adventures on the Gorge

Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 30-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half way through the trip, your trip will pull over and eat a deli-style lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into the heart of the Gorge. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V. Between rapids, there is time for swimming, floating and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. The trip ends just past the New River Gorge Bridge.

Very well run company. Everything went smoothly and staff were all friendly and helpful. Ray Ray was main leader and was outstanding. We were disappointed to not have Ray Ray in our raft. We overheard him informing his raft of gorge history, mining towns, geography. Would have liked to get that experience. Our guide was crass, told distasteful jokes and made fun of participants. It made for an uncomfortable setting. Other than him - it was wonderful! Lunch was good and opportunities to swim and jump off rocks were appreciated. Water was warm and overall we had a lot of fun. Highly recommend. We were first time rafters and loved it!

Everything was fantastic. Great family fun. I recommend Adventures on the Gorge for fun and safety. The guides were very good. The New River is amazing and the base camp was nice and clean.

John was an excellent guide. We had a blast. It was calm, beautiful and relaxing at times and a bit scary and exciting at other times. The instructions given before the trip are thorough and safety checks before you start on the river are performed. There is a fun atmosphere but the guides are serious and professional when it is necessary. Lunch was good. A bit different from the usual because of COVID, but it was plentiful and tasty. The accommodations include a clean shower/changing area, a nice restaurant and a shop for souvenirs and necessities. Would certainly return.
