It has been decades since I went to a Luau on the islands. It has become incredibly commercial and impersonal. They do 3 of these a week with 1000 people at each one. There is a stage with a sound system like a concert. It was in a building that was open on the sides which was nice but it wasn't exactly outdoors. The food was so so, salad, costco hawaiian rolls, teriyaki chicken, pulled pork, island fish, macaroni salad, rice, chow mein, seasoned veggies, fruit, pineapple upside down cake, coconut pudding, chocolate pudding. You were assigned a round table with other people outside your group.
The train ride was educational and informative. The dancers were very good.
It's difficult for children to sit through 4 hours of just observing/sitting and not doing anything.
Maybe this is how all luaus are now, but I wouldn't do it again with so many people and such commercialization.
