The bus driver out to the Plantation was very informative on the history and entertaining. He also took us on a short tour of part of the gardens. The house itself is not as grand as other Plantation homes, but the house guide was very knowledgeable. We took the tram through the swamp and were able to see wildlife and alligators while listening to a different tour guide. We did not make it through much of the gardens as time is limited, what we did see was quite pretty especially with the bridges as backdrops. Keep in mind this is not a manicured garden, it was not intended to be that. The spring time is probably more colorful of a time to view the gardens though.

Great tour and experience of the old south with the most beautiful gardens I’ve ever seen! The heritage and history was comprehensive and the food shack for snacks and gift shop were excellent! The wildlife did not disappoint!

I really regret not taking the Slave Quarters tour but it was extra and I had already contributed enough to this particular slave traders family. (Not sure why there is a schoolhouse on site. We all know it was highly illegal to educate slaves so I would have liked to learn about that). Beautiful gardens if you don’t think about the sad and brutal history of the slaves this family bought snd sold to live this ostentatious lifestyle. I would encourage everyone to visit McLeod Plantation as well as they incorporate slavery into the tour and don’t shy away from the atrocities. Note: it wasn’t until 1980 that the tour guides could use the word “slave”. (I suspect this coincides with the time the mini series “Roots” was on television.)
