What To Expect

Greatland Adventures

The Matanuska Glacier is one of Alaska's premiere destinations. At 27 miles long and 4 miles wide it is Alaska's largest glacier accessible by road. It also is boasts one of the most accessible areas to walk on of any glacier in Alaska. Marvel at ice that formed thousands of years ago high in the Chugach Mountains.

Matanuska Glacier

Your day will start with a magnificent scenic drive along the Glenn Highway with stunning mountain vistas and plenty of time for photo stops. Next we will drive to the toe of the glacier to dawn our ice cleats and begin exploring the glacier by foot. Each day is unique due to the dynamic nature of the glacier. We generally spend two hours and walk three miles on the ice. After exploring the glacier we will have lunch at a local eatery with stunning views of the glacier and surrounding scenery. Each tour will be customized to suit your groups interest. This is a once in a lifetime bucket list opportunity to explore glacial ice!

Our tour guides Mike and Bill were so friendly and fun to be around, and are clearly very passionate about their job. The tour was stunning, in the winter you can access many different areas of the glacier, including the crevasses. the drive to get there is also jaw dropping. All the staff at Greatland are very pleasant to talk to and work with, they are extremely accommodating and friendly.

Can't say enough about our trip to the Matanuska Glacier. Our guide, Jonathan, was so friendly and we learned a ton from him on our drive over to the glacier about Alaska. He even pulled over so we could snap a picture of the beautiful sunrise over the mountains and would frequently point out animals we could see along the way. When we got to Matanuska, we had a ton of time to explore and we were lucky enough to have the glacier all to ourselves! This was truly a dream of a day made even better by a great guide. Can't recommend Greatland enough!

This glacier hike is not to be missed. I had such a wonderful experience, from the beauty of the environment to the friendliness of our guides. Greatland does an excellent job with this excursion. Highly recommend.
