The tour began with being picked up and taken to the business location. There they had us sign comprehensive waivers and told us to load up in the van. All the way up the mountain (which is NOT to the top), there was no brief or familiarization with the local terrain as the write up says. Once at the 6,500 foot elevation, we were given a safety briefing and a placard explaining the dos and don’ts, but the guide then told everyone they could violate virtually every one of the rules and encouraged riders to just go down the hill on their own. While on the second descent, the group passed a National Park Ranger who conducted a car stop on the chase van. His purpose for doing so was to assess the safety of the tour, since most riders had abandoned the guide and were streaming down the mountain at their own pace and speed, spread out oven and mile. Afterward, the driver who was stopped proceeded to lambast the Ranger for daring to stop her, and ranted on anti law enforcement rhetoric for about 20-minutes. While the tour can be fun, this tour is reckless and disrespectful to law enforcement that was just trying to ensure the groups’s safety. Finally, there was a stop at a cafe, but nothing was included in the $187 cost of the ride. There was a water and granola bar provided at the office in the beginning, but nothing the shop. It’s up to the rider if he or she feels it’s appropriate to bad mouth officers looking out for the group’s safety, and whether a guide ought to be telling the group to completely disregard the rules. Not only is it reckless, but opens the company to huge civil liability if a biker got in an accident. Disappointing.

Aloha, This review is completely inaccurate and false. Safety is our number one priority always. This review is completely inaccurate, untrue and false in its facts. We always do a safety briefing and the guidelines are to be adhered to at all times. The guides were NEVER pulled over by law enforcement, nor were they warned or cited for anything. We always respect our dedicated Law Enforcement and follow all regulations and rules. We have a Permit which goes through much scrutiny including Law Enforcement annually. This reviewer is grossly inaccurate and totally misinformed.

I purchased the guided bike ride from Norwegian Cruise Lines (as part of a 7 day Hawaii island cruise) and Mountain Riders provided the guided bike ride. The terms and conditions provided at time of purchase ( by NCL) did not say anything about a minimum speed that you had to ride the bike on the downhill run. According to Mountain Riders, if you ride slower than 20 mph (32.2km/hr) you are not allowed to ride the bike and must return to the van. This is what happened to me. I am a competent bike rider, but prefer not to go fast (for my own safety plus I wanted to enjoy the views from the crater). Such a disappointing experience. Don’t book the Maui bike ride with Mountain Riders!!!

Hi Karen, Thank you for sharing your experience on our tour, we're sorry to hear that didn't enjoy the trip with us which you and your husband were refunded for. In the safety briefing prior to the bike ride our tour guides inform all riders that for the safety of our guests and others on the road that the riding speed is to stay between 18-25 mph on the tour. Riders are not just put in the van for not maintaining the speed limit but rather it's based on their ability to ride the bike safely. The unique nature of the tour does make some riders nervous which is to be expected but we do are best to inform riders to keep them safe. We understand from the guides that you voluntarily rode in the van the second half of the ride but finished the ride of the bottom section through Makawao to Paia and your husband road the whole ride. While we are disappointed to hear you were not satisfied we did our best to inform riders. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your vacation in Hawaii. Mahalo
